Riku has a tall stature, standing at about 6 feet tall. He has blue eyes, brown hair, white skin (with a slight tannish tone) and a short-cut hairstlye. He weighs an average 187 lbs and has average muscle mass. He is neither skinny nor bulky, but sits at a good middle-ground between the two. He is 20 years old, with clean-shaven facial hair. He generally smells good, wearing the necessary fragrances needed to not smell like a latrine. He has an average male voice, not too deep but not nearly high enough to pass as a female.

Riku is generally a good-tempered guy with a large reserve of patience. He is not easily angered, but is very volatile when he finally blows his lid. Afterwards he is very apologetic and tries everything he can to make amends with those he hurt during his loss of temper. He generally gets along with everyone, keeping controversial topics to himself and his close group of friends. He is fairly social, but does like time to himself time to time. He is a hard-worker and will fulfill his job to the best of his ability given the circumstances. He has a habit of messing with his hair when nervous or tapping his foot when anxious/excited. He loves to read and draw, along with stargazing. He is generally cautious when it comes to combat, preferring to stay back and evaluate a situation. Mark treats everyone with respect until they cross him enough, but will rarely join an argument (unless it's a good-natured, fun one) and will try to help those he can. Others refer to him as “willing to give you the shirt off his back.”

Riku Tanaka was born on Yamatai in it' capital of Kyoto (Geshrinopolis until YE 24) in YE 20. His mother was a school teacher and his father worked for the local government. He had a fairly easy life, and while his parents wanted him to work in politics, he had always had his mind set on Star Army. He went to school like any other child and excelled in science and math, while average in other areas. After school he joined the Yamatai Star Army in hopes to make something of himself and not follow in his parents' footsteps. He remembered that when he was 8, during the Mishhu attacks, his father tried to hide him from it as much as he could. As he grew up he later learned about the attacks and how close Yamatai had come to being invaded. At the time he didn't very much care about the secession of Nepleslia and continued to live life as an average child. As he grew up he began to have conflicted emotions towards the Nepleslians, sometimes viewing them as brothers and sisters, and at other times viewing them as traitors. During the Battle of Yamatai when NMX forces tried to invade Kyoto his father took him and his mother to a shelter in case the NMX ground forces broke through the defenses. In the end of YE 39 and the start of YE 40 Riku signed up for the Star Army, wanting to do his part in the Kuvexian War.

Riku’s first assignment on the YSS Kaiyo began with a briefing on the ship, then a short journey to a planet simply called “Planet H”. Upon landing and securing cave entrances for Team Kraken, the planet began to break apart following the arrival of an unknown ship which turned out to be Kuvexian. The ground teams evacuated the planet after suffering one casualty and boarded the Kuvexian ship. The boarding party swept and cleared the ship, and Riku assisted Care. Once the ship was secured the planetary fragments, further broken apart by the Kaiyo, either began their journey into the void of space or were intercepted in a planet’s atmosphere or orbital defenses.

1. Domestic: Learning from his mother, Riku is able to cook basic meals, do his own laundery and that of others, he rather likes to clean and believes it is a sign of respect for something to be neat and presentable, though he is not too skilled in taking care of infants since he has not had a child of his own or a younger sibling.

2. Chemistry: Having taken an interest to the subject of chemistry in school, he became sort of self-educated by adding onto his education at school and in training.

3. Fighting: During his training he became proficient in hand-to-hand combat, often sparring with his peers (usually emerging as the winner).

4. Physical: He enjoys running and other exercise activities, becoming proficient at them over time.

5. Survival and Military: He often enjoys camping and excelled in his survival training. While some environments may prove challenging, in most circumstances he can find water, forage for food, and hunt wildlife. He also knows how to construct a basic shelter from the elements and how to signal for help in the event he becomes stranded.

6. Technology Operation: Riku is very familiar on how to use a computer and other electronic equipment.

7. Mathematics: Riku excelled in most areas of mathematics in both school and training, proving valuable in operation of a long rifle and other areas of training.
