Star Army undershirts are a series of T-Shirt-style undershirts used by the Star Army of Yamatai since YE 21.

Star Army undershirts typically cost 2.5 KS each and are available from any Star Army Clothing Store or Star Army Surplus Store.

T-Shirts have been in use long before the current era. When the Star Army of Yamatai was formed, it began using them in its duty uniforms as an undershirt for duty uniform jackets like the Star Army Jacket, Type 35.

A black T-shirt was used with the Star Army exercise uniform from YE 27 to YE 29 when it was replaced by a white ringer T-shirt as part of the Star Army Exercise Uniform, Type 29. When the Star Army Exercise Uniform, Type 38 was introduced, it used a Star Army Regal Blue T-shirt in an attempt to use the same T-Shirt for the exercise uniform as the undershirt used for the duty uniforms such as the Star Army Duty Uniform, Type 35. However, the dark blue was not visible enough and it was replaced with a white ringer T-shirt again to create the Star Army Exercise Uniform, Type 40.

In YE 47, Taisho Ketsurui Yui authorized dark blue T-shirts with “SAOY” in white for use by the Star Army¹⁾.

Soldiers of the Star Army of Yamatai are now authorized to wear a T-shirt consisting of a dark blue short sleeve T-shirt with “SAOY” in bold white capital letters on the front (and optionally, the back). This shirt can be used for sleep, exercise, casual wear, off-duty wear, and as a substitute for the standard Star Army Regal Blue shirt with the hinomaru emblem. The SAOY T-shirt can be worn with the dark blue exercise shorts, or any field uniform. Unit commanders can set policies for their unit on when this shirt is worn.

These shirts are inexpensive, easily manufactured and can be produced in cottage industry operations, such as schools that wish to show their support for our soldiers in a tangible way.

The Type 38 T-shirt is made from a soft artificial cotton-like material that wicks away moisture and provides passive cooling. It has a moderate thickness. The shirt-is extremely bacteria-resistant, which helps combat body odor.

Type 21 T-shirts are are made from jersey-knit cotton.

It is common for the shirts to have a Star Army Hinomaru printed on them or sewn on as a patch.

After YE 47, the Star Army also began using shirts with the large white letters “SAOY.”

The Star Army Undershirt is worn under the Star Army Jacket, Type 35 as part of the Star Army Duty Uniform, Type 35 or Star Army Duty Uniform, Type 42. It can also be worn with the Star Army Coverall, Type 36.

Star Army shirts can safely be washed in normal machine wash warm cycles.
