Type 34 Main Battle Tank

An upgraded and modified design of the main_battle_tank produced by origin, the 2A version was made specifically for export to and use by the star_army_of_yamatai in ye_34.

It is known officially by Star Army soldiers as the “Type 34 MBT”, and nicknamed “Oni” (鬼 - Ogre).

As of ye_40, this vehicle is no longer utilized by the star_army_of_yamatai.

About and History

Though the introduction and sale of the Origin Main Battle Tank in early ye_34 was a relative success, it was not until later in the year that a proper military ordered the vehicle. The fifth_standard_fleet of the star_army_of_yamatai requested production of a tank to replace several of its assets, and also fill out several criteria it deemed vital. The vehicle was to be made highly mobile, provide excellent protection, and be capable of both direct and indirect fire with its main weapon for starters.

To ensure quality and approval amongst the ranks of Star Army soldiers, veteran tank and vehicle crews of the fleet were in constant communication with the Origin Development Team responsible for the production of the new version, which was then rolled out of testing status and into production as quickly as possible.

The end result was the OI-K2-2A, which went on to become the Type 34 Main Battle Tank, with its first production run being conducted in YE 34. As it arrived in inventory, the vehicle was put through its paces and evaluated for strengths, weaknesses, and uses it had on the battlefield by the fifth_standard_fleet. By ye_35, this process was completed , with the vehicle being replaced with its successor, the type_35_mbt_jinsoku_oni for general use in planetary combat forces.

Appearance

As the Type 34 is a provisional unit intended for field testing, the tank does not come in parade colors when rolling off the production line as with typical production. Instead, the vehicle is automatically given a Multi-Net Camouflage pattern. Overall, the tank is very boxy in appearance, and though both the armor of the hull and the turret is reasonably sloped, it can be described as a box, on top of a box as a turret, with another mini-turret on top. The tank is bristling with weapons, with its main gun being very visible, present at the center of the turret, with its attachment point well guarded by a sealed, armored and well sloped mantlet.

A powerful coaxial gun is present at the main gun's side - two more of the same autocannons can be seen on the remote control weapon station on top, arranged in an over under pattern, which appears as a smaller turret. This weapon station also has a pair of rectangular boxes, which serves as the offensive mini-missile racks. Additional boxlike mini-missile racks of significantly smaller capacity are located across the hull, holding numerous counter-missiles, smoke rounds and flares for defense and various other uses. Integrated into the turret itself, are two sponson based automatic grenade launchers.

The entirety of the vehicle is suspended upon a sturdy, tracked system of propulsion, which is partially covered by mudguards made out of thick metal sheets, which also serve as spaced armor. For the crew, several electronic sensors are visible throughout the hull, providing high definition visual feed and information.

Interior Description

Turret

Both the Commander and Gunner reside inside the turret. However, most of the space is taken up by the gun, autoloader, and ammunition magazines, creating a semi-cramped work area. The commander station provides access to the tank's communication and computer system though a volumetric interface, as well as monitoring equipment used to scan the outside environment. In addition, the commander station provides control to the top mounted secondary turret that houses the lesser weapons of the tank.

The gunner's station houses access to the controls of the main gun of the Type 34 MBT as well as volumetric controls to the autoloader. Inside the turret, the commander is typically located below the right cupola, with the gunner below the left cupola. The two are separated by the main gun's breech, and are further separated when the massive autoloader arm leaps forward to load a new round of ammunition - though dangerous, the system includes a safety sensor system that prevents the autoloader from working when there is an obstruction.

Ammunition is stowed inside the automated magazine in the rear of the turret with a total of 60 rounds. Additional rounds of ammunition may be stowed in the hull, but is not advised - only the turret ammunition racks feature blowout panels which serve to protect the crew in the event of the magazine being penetrated. Small, neat and tidy analog control systems are also present within the tank should volumetric systems give out - though the visual feed within the tank provides a full 360 degree view, should they go down, a pair of heavy goggles would need to be worn in several cases.

Hull

The driver's compartment rests in the lower forward section of the hull and consists of a reclined crash seat with volumetric controls to the tank's systems as well as the steering wheel and pedals. Though more cramped than the other sections of the vehicle, the driver's is the most comfortable. Additional ammunition and supplies are often stored in the main hull directly below the turret, with the reactor and drive systems located to the rear of the tank's hull.

An added modification is a V-Shaped lower hull. This serves to protect the tank and its crew from explosions directly underneath the tank where the belly is softest. The V-Shape helps to direct the concussive blast of high explosives and plasma away, rather than providing a flat surface to go straight up against.

Weapon Systems

Primary Weapon System(s)

125mm Gauss Cannon

Serving as the main weapon of the Type 34, the 125mm Gauss Cannon provides both powerful direct fire and high explosive indirect fire as artillery. It is well capable of sniping and picking off infantry or raining shells down from above, both easily done from kilometers away.

125mm Gauss Cannon

Location: Main Turret
Purpose: Anti-Armor, Anti-Personnel, Indirect Fire
Damage: Tier 9, Munition Dependent
Range: 45,000 Meters (45 Kilometers, 28 Miles)
Rate of Fire: 1 Round Per 5 Seconds

Secondary Weapon System(s)

25mm Automatic Gauss Cannon (3)

A robust and easy to maintain weapon, the 25mm AGC provides reasonable firepower for the Type 34, capable of demolishing buildings, wrecking havoc on infantry and damaging power armors. It comes with two mounted on a secondary turret up top, and the third as a coaxial weapon.

Location: Remote Control Turret, Coaxial
Purpose: Anti-Armor, Anti-Personnel
Damage: Tier 5-6, Munition Dependent
Range: 10 KM/6.2 Miles, Atmosphere
Rate of Fire: 6 Rounds Per Second

PMML Platform (2)

A heavily modified version of the Origin Industries weapon, the Portable Mini-Missile Launcher Platform has been made to have ammunition commonality with SAoY OAP launchers used with the Mindy and Daisy. This ensures ammunition commonality, and logistical simplicity. In addition to these changes, the case is lined with Yarvex to help contain the explosion in the case of ammunition cook-off - the explosion will be vented out from the front and back should the missiles prematurely detonate.

Type 35 Automatic Grenade Launcher (2)

Replacing Origin's 42mm Airburst Grenade Launchers found on the OMBT, the Type 34 MBT uses a Type 35 AGL modified for mounted vehicular use. These remain a semi-autonomous point defense weapon with limited firing arcs, requiring user input to fire. The launchers serve the purpose of preventing enemy movement out of the firing arc of the main 125mm gauss cannon with its high explosive airburst rounds.

Countermeasure Augmentation Pods (4)

Heavily modified, the pre-existing mini-missile launchers in the Star Army of Yamatai's inventory have been remade to be more boxlike and with a larger ammunition capacity than its normal version. The usage of the same munitions remains, ensuring simplified logistics, and the launchers themselves retain a 60% parts commonality with standard calf mounted models, mainly electronics.

Range: 80 KM/50 Miles, Atmosphere
Rate of Fire: Individual, Salvo
Ammunition: 25 Mini-Missiles (Each)

Optional Weapons

Multi-Flare Launcher

Optionally mounted on the rear top of the turret and facing up into the air, the modified CAP fires flares. These serve to provide either visible light or infrared illumination on the battlefield. In addition, they may also fire numerous signal flares as well, provided the rounds are loaded. The launcher is typically positioned on the left side of the turret roof.

Countermeasure Augmentation Pods

Location: Turret Roof, Rear Left
Purpose: Multi-Spectrum Illumination
Damage: None
Range: 80 KM/50 Miles, Atmosphere
Rate of Fire: Individual
Ammunition: 25 Mini-Missiles

Multi-Spectrum Smoke-Chaff Launchers

Another optional piece of equipment, the MSSC Launchers serve to instantly generate smoke and chaff to break weapons locks. The missiles, typically located at the rear right of the turret roof, fire up into the air roughly two meters before detonating, instantly obscuring the tank in Smoke and Chaff. The smoke visually conceals the tank as the cloud rapidly billows out, and also prevents most sensors from getting a lock or detecting the tank itself.

System Descriptions

Hull and Armor

The hull of the Type 34 MBT consists of interlocking pieces of ADNR encased in Durandium Alloy. This provides ample structural integrity, as the more malleable material provides some degree of give, preventing shattering, while the harder material makes up for the softer material's lack of hardness and in turn preventing deformation. Though the armor is technically 'composite' due to the use of more than one material, the majority of its composition is Yamataium, a hard, tough, heat resistant metal capable of some degree of self-repair. This is backed by layers of insulation to prevent energy weapons and radiation harming the interior. Due to its properties, the tank's Yamataium armor is coated with a 5mm thick layer of Durandium Alloy to simply maintain its aesthetics.

With the usage of Yamataium in the armor, the Type 34 was able to be produced with a weight savings of 4 tons, allowing for improved power-to-weight ratio, ease of transport and terrain passability.

A powered winch with durandium tow cable and hook are attached to the rear of the armored hull for various uses.

Shields and Defensive Systems

With the Type 34 entering military service with the Star Army of Yamatai, the shield systems for the tank were upgraded accordingly. The Graviton-Magnetic defensive field systems were made to be semi-conformal, partially taking on the rough form of the tank itself with roughly 10in/25cm between the inner edge of the field and the hull of the vehicle on average.

NBC Protection Systems

The nuclear, biological and chemical protection systems allow the vehicle to completely seal up and either filter air from the outside, or recycle internal atmosphere for up to 3 days. In the case of contaminated air getting inside the cabin, the NBC systems also have an emergency 'flush' mode where it goes into overdrive, rapidly blowing out contaminated air and replacing it with uncontaminated atmosphere to decontaminate the interior. In addition, the system can seal itself against the vacuum of space, and re-pressurize the cabin up to 4 times off its own air supply.

Variable Voltage Defense System

An electrical current may be safely run through the outer hull of the vehicle, as the interior is fully insulated. This enables the vehicle to discourage boarders, incapacitating them or even carbonizing personnel, depending on the setting. It must be manually activated by the crew in order to function.

CPS Control Device

A Conformal Psionic Signal Control Device had been added and serves to protect the crew and a conformal area around the vehicle from being affected by psionic anomalies or attacks. The device prevents direct mental assault on the crew members inside, as well as subversion, intrusion and direct control. In addition, psyionic based attacks are often disrupted or dissipated altogether upon entering the conformal field emitted by the system.

Propulsion

Small, minute amounts of Zesuaium are used in the drive system and transmission of the Type 34 in the form of a high wear resistant coating. This allows the tank's speed governor to be scaled back without incurring any mechanical problems. As a result the tank very rapidly accelerate to 40 MPH/64 KPH in 6 seconds, an improvement over its 1A variant, but takes longer to reach its full top speed as with its predecessor.

The tracks of the Type 34 are made out of Yamataium like its armor to ensure they remain well maintained and self repair any damage incurred. As a result, the tank's tracks are just as noisy as conventional ones made of steel. Despite this, the tracks also include high wear resistant polymer grousers which are very rubber-like in terms of grip and friction.

The final, and most notable change in the tank's design when altered for the Star Army would be the graviton manipulation plates mounted under the armor. These project their exotic particles through the hull, and interface with any body underneath the tank, allowing it to lessen or increase the effects of gravity exerted upon its hull, but not the crew. This greatly contributes to the vehicle's high top speed, and also allows it to function on the surfaces of ships and space stations.

Power

A trio of BURST reactors set up in a clover leaf pattern supplies all the electrical power the Type 34 needs in order to function. For convenience of those inside the vehicle, there are several electrical outlets available for use located throughout the interior.

For the Star Army of Yamatai, the Type 34 was made to also be capable of utilizing the very same micro-fusion reactors found within the M6 Daisy Power Armor's Heavy Fusion Thruster Pack as well as the power systems from the M9 TASHA. These are easily removed and interchangeable with the reactors found standard in the tank, promoting parts commonality. However, the Daisy I's reactors are anemic in power output even when clover leafed, and most often result in a 35% reduction in top speed, acceleration, and shield regeneration when all three BURST reactors are replaced with them.

Electronics

Though outfitted with the Armor Integrated Electronics System (AIES), the Type 34 utilizes several parts from the M9 Tasha for its numerous electronics systems, resulting in high parts commonality between the two in regards to these systems. As with the original OI-K2-1A it was based off of, the operating system, in this case the AIES, is altered to better suit the needs of a ground vehicle. This includes some hardware upgrades to bring the AIES into line with the system it replaced, the PAWN on the original Origin MBT.

Sensors

The AIES reliably detects electromagnetic activity, scalar emissions and tachyon particles in addition to the traditional visual sensors present. A sensor sub-suite is also dedicated to detecting aether usage and aether based systems.

The primary sensors the Type 34s are relatively visible, and though they may 'button up' with sliding armor plates, a slit will still be vulnerable. In the event that the primary sensors go down, the full 360 degree volumetric video feed to the crew will be cut, and a more limited system will activate in its place. For the commander, the combined secondary and tertiary systems consists of a ring of eight volumetric panels affixed in a floating ring over the commander's head, which acts like traditional glass periscopes in a cupola. This ring of periscope panels may be grasped and pulled down to head level, and will return to position upon being given a nudge upwards.

The very same goes for the driver and gunner. For the gunner, the main difference is a small volumetric gunnery panel. However, should even that fail, an eyepiece and facerest are available for use to aim and fire the gun. Meanwhile, the driver's three view panels behind the head are located forward and above, acting as rear view mirrors - in typical operation of the backup systems, the driver leaves these 'volumetric periscopes' lowered. Should these fail, the usage of wired goggles would be necessary.

Targeting and Fire Control

The Targeting and Fire Control of the Type 34s are improved upon from their predecessors, and can track up to 24 targets with detailed information such as heading, velocity, type and energy signatures. An additional 50 targets or objects of interest can be tracked with IFF alongside position and orientation. The AIES also provides excellent fire control for the weapons mounted, allowing them to be used to their fullest by compensating for atmospheric density, gravitational pull of the planet, rotation of the planet, the air's humidity, wind heading and so on.

Communications

The typical AIES on the Type 34s have systems for hyperspace, laser and radio, but being mounted on a wheeled vehicles and tanks not meant to be hurtling through space, designers saw fit to remove hyperspace communication capacities. Both laser and radio communications systems remain on board, though cut down to specifications better suiting its role on a planet's surface. Thanks to the TASHA's components however, the Type 34s now all boast loudspeakers which complement their preexisting audio sensor systems.

Parts Commonality/Compatibility

See: type_34_ground_vehicle_common_compoments

Due to the construction of the Type 34 Main Battle Tank, the vehicle has a 100% parts commonality or compatibility with the OI-K2-1 series tank. With the OI-K1-1 series, the Type 34 only has a comparatively marginal 35% parts commonality or compatibility, with the percentage changing depending on the version of the vehicles. Oddly enough, the vehicle also sports a rough 5-10 percent overall parts commonality with the Mindy 2, Daisy I, Daisy II and tasha_m9_team_autonomous_support_heavy_armor.

This wide parts commonality and/or compatibility greatly reduces strain on logistics as well as overall repair costs.
