The 505 Emergency Medical Vehicle

The 505 Emergency Medical Vehicle was developed in YE 40 to transport patients and provide in-the-field care. It is used by both civilian and military hospitals in the New Dusk Conclave.

About the Vehicle

The 505 Emergency Medical Vehicle nicknamed the Ambulance 1), is a medically equipped vehicle that transports patients to treatment facilities, such as the Guardian's Sanctuary Hospital, for healing, and medical treatments. This means that it is designed for the sole purpose of transporting injured, and even often times critically injured individuals, to the Hospitals from any given location within Capital City. It is equipped with flashing warning lights and sirens which signal others to an emergency. It can rapidly transport paramedics to the scene, or carry equipment for administering emergency care.

Most ambulances use a design based on vans, or pick-up trucks. The patients are contained within the back area of the vehicle, while strapped to a hovering platform, which was made with the comfort in mind, as well as the means to contain any injured limbs from getting worse. The vehicle was built with anti-traffic useful hardware, as well as gel crash bag technology for safety in case of impacts.

Key Features

Primarily to avoid traffic in a given emergency, the vehicle is capable of Flight due to the anti-gravity technology beneath it. The driver can manipulate this technology to an extent, to make the vehicle rise in the air, or to go down onto the ground. Inside there are inertia dampeners within to keep the patients, as well as the paramedics inside safe when the vehicle is speeding.

History

After settling down on Sirris VI in YE 40, the Department of Engineering began creating the vehicle after a lengthy discussion about the future problems they would encounter. One problem was the duration it took to get to a patient and get them to a hospital on time. This would be a feat that would prove difficult as the city and the population grew, especially with traffic coming up. This vehicle was then fitted with devices to defy gravity like the starships to avoid traffic and cut down travel time.

Eventually, a facility was created to create a mass production of these vehicles, which were given to hospitals like Guardian's Sanctuary Hospital. Over time, the vehicle was upgraded and expanded to perform better in the field.

Appearance

The SOS Emergency Medical Vehicle has a somewhat square shape to it, the back part being taller than the driver’s section. On the side is the name of the vehicle and over the windshields. Above the windshield name label is the vehicle number, and above that is a bright cyan blue light that usually flashes when in an emergency.

There is a door on either side of the front area, but the left door is more for the maintenance of the driver, which is an AI. The next four doors are on the next part of the ‘ambulance’ which is for storage of additional medical supplies and, at the back, is a larger one, which has a ramp attached for loading and offloading of passengers. The coloring of the vehicle is white, with a red streak along the sides with a medical symbol at the side. This is to give it a more comfortable look, and help it stand out to other drivers and civilians around. When landing, there is a landing gear that allows the vehicle to land and keeps it stable when parked.

Interior

The back interior is a large but still compact area of the vehicle, and it has the most activity during operations. To the left of the Hovering stretcher is a cabinet with some pain-relieving medications, bottled waters, extra bandages, and gauze. One paramedic sits on a seat to its right while the other sits above the stretcher with a heart monitor and blood pressure monitors to the right. There are additional subsystems beside the seat at the back with a compartment for extra latex gloves. Above is a screen that showed the outside, but in the case of a wild patient, there is a sedative weapon up there too, ready to shoot to knock out the patient.

On board Systems Descriptions

Besides the equipment directly used to treat patients, the 505 Emergency vehicles may be fitted with a range of additional equipment that is used to facilitate patient care.

The first of the 505 Emergency vehicle’s subsystems is one of its most important equipment. This is a Two-way radio, as it allows for the issuing of jobs to the ambulance, and can allow the crew to pass information back to control, or to the hospital.2) This uses secure digital systems to prevent infiltration and criminal acts.

  • Trauma lighting – Besides normal work lighting, the Emergency vehicles can be fitted with special lighting3) which is used when the patient becomes photosensitive.
  • Air conditioning – The Emergency vehicles are often fitted with a separate air conditioning system, to serve the working area from that which serves the cab. This helps to maintain an appropriate temperature for any patients being treated, but may also feature additional features such as filtering against airborne pathogens.
  • Evidence gathering CCTV – The Emergency vehicles are now being fitted with video cameras used to record activity either inside, or outside the vehicle, and may also be fitted with sound recording devices. This can be used as a form of protection from violence against ambulance crews, or sometimes4) to prove, or disprove cases where a member of the crew stands accused of malpractice.
  • Data recorders – These are often placed in Emergency vehicles to record such information as speed, braking power and time, activation of active emergency warnings such as lights and sirens, and seat belt usage. These are often used in coordination with GPS units, and act as an activity log for reviewing handling of emergency call response times, and proper handling of the vehicle. Much like most aircraft and starships, this is essentially a black box, storing relevant data, as well as files uploaded by the crew for secure storage.

Weapons Systems

On the outside, there are no weapons, because that would defeat the purpose of a medical vehicle. However, on the inside, there is a weapon attached and extendable from the ceiling. This emergency pacification device is for aggressive patients, with enough sedatives to knock out a ID-SOL, or a Tsumi even in the case for larger species of patients.

Propulsion System

As of YE 42 The Emergency Vehicle uses a Helix Plasma Engines to control its propulsion.

Cargo Capacity

Can carry up to 5500 lbs5), in equipment and personnel, with various containers and lockers inside for the equipment. Personnel are carried in seats, or patients in the stretchers.
