Members of Star Army Reconnaissance "Teisatsu" are specialised infantry soldiers. They are closely associated with Star Army Special Operations and are members of Sword's Edge. They focus on low-support and low-visibility operations, at the cost of less proficiency in power armour battles. The occupational colors for reconnaissance units in the Star Army of Yamatai are the cornflower blue of Infantry, but Rikugun based units can wear RIKUPAT.

The broad term “Ranger” can apply to any of the below MOSes that are administered by Star Army Reconnaissance. Soldiers can only belong to one MOS.

Star Army Fleet Scouts, which are controlled by Fleets.

rikugun_rangers, which are controlled by Rikugun Area Armies.

rikugun_scouts, which are controlled by Rikugun Area Armies.

Star Army Advisors, which are directly controlled by Star Army Special Operations.

frontier_guard, which are usually controlled by Fourth Fleet.

The Star Army of Yamatai began training specialized reconnaissance operatives in YE 40 under Star Army Reconnaissance, in Star Army Infantry. Before that, reconnaissance duties were handled spontaneously by other units either too specialized to fulfill the role full time or too general to operate within non-detection parameters.

The emergence of the Kuvexian threat in YE 37 highlighted the need for a specialized forward reconnaissance division, given the implications of a war with an established nation-state on the same level of technical aptitude as the Yamatai Star Empire. The ad-hoc allocation of troops of wildly differing specialties to the role was seen as unsustainable and highly unoptimized, prompting the formation of the occupation.

After the establishment of Star Army Special Operations in YE 43, Star Army Reconnaissance was effectively transferred to the control of SASO. Upon review in the following years, SASO split the Ranger occupation into MOS' and designated them to the appropriate organisations. Their information can be found via the relevant pages.
