Niranium

A material that is produced in the home universe of the Norians and Ayenee.

History and Background Information

The discovery of the elemental metal of Lorenzium in YE 01 was vital to the Space Race and Colonization of Ayenee that followed. Lorenzium, a metal similar to Titanium was in abundance on the Norian capital worlds and colonies. Lorenzium would be the heart of the new space program providing a base material for ships, power armor, and mecha. In YE 15, additional research yielded a close-to-modern niranium, however, the modern version of niranium would not emerge until YE 21 after the Chaos Hive War. After the widespread production of Leviathan Husk, niranium became a more secondary material for building conventional structures and objects. After YE 45 and the start of production of hybridized vessels1), the use of the material in its different forms increased remarkably.

Manufacturing

In YE 15, scientists discovered that when formed into a complex alloy with carbon nano-tubes, Lorezium's strength could be increased. The resulting metal would be called β€œNiranium”, however in YE 21 during the Chaos Hive War the alliance with the Nerimian Defense Initiative yielded the sharing of technology to produce Yamataium/Leptonium. Norian scientists found Yamataium/Leptonium useful, but it also was expensive. Through reverse engineering of Nerimian Defense Initiative technology following the war, they added a similar metalloid with self-healing molecular bonds to niranium. The result was very comparable to Yama-Dura.

At the end of the Void Wars in YE 40, the need for a stronger version of the metal would be needed in future conflicts. So the material was further reinforced with femtomechanical machinery to increase the self annealing qualities of the metal, which led to changing the processing of the Lorenzium, which led to other variations in the metal.

Variation and Comparisons

The variety and configurations of niranium are as follows:

Variation Comparison Armor Category Cost
Standard Yama-Dura Intermediate Moderate
Reinforced Yamataium Heavy Expensive
Transparent Yamataium Heavy Very Expensive
Melded with Leviathan Husk2) Zesuaium Extremely Heavy Very Expensive

Tsenlan

In YE 44, with the Arrival of the Norians in the Kikyo Sector there was no Lorenzium present in local space. As a result, the production of Niranium would come to an end. The niranium that was present would be conventional-built structures and objects within the Leviathans of the survivor fleet. It was likely that salvaged materials would be highly coveted by Tsenlan.

This changed in YE 45, when it was obvious that there were survivors in what would become the United Norian Imperium. The United Norian Imperium agreed to begin export, of regular niranium, to Tsenlan, with the agreement that it would have a 8% tariff added to cover the cost of logistics and transportation.

Transitions

In YE 46 The decision to move core worlds to the Kosuke Sector3) led to concern again about the availability of niranium, but the United Norian Imperium intends to continue production by utilizing Lorenzium on their core worlds and transuniversal mining operations.

Weaknesses

Like any matter-based armor or protection it is more susceptible to damage by antimatter and high energy plasmas such as Aether.
