Alex stands at 183 cm tall and for an Operator is very stoutly built with a strong physique and fair complexion. Chestnut brown hair sits in curls upon his head and brown eyes blink attractively and a closely trimmed and neatly kept beard frames his features nobly. He typically allows for a more obvious cybernetic appearance to appear from his neck down, though anything outside his hands and neck is most often covered by clothing naturally. His voice is deep though he speaks with a lilting tone that can sometimes lisp through certain syllables. Alex typically smells of a pleasant blend of marine notes thanks to bergamot and neroli combining with cedar wood and patchouli. He moves deliberately and with a measured and controlled motion; while his posture is always upright and straight.

Alex’s personality is palpable in his appearance, as might be expected for an Operator given it preceded it, and so the strong, handsome, high-spirited and noble, fierce, and yet calm appearance reflects his own nature without fail. Typically he is focused and driven to complete his duties as what he does is who he is, and he struggles with those who see what they do as secondary or incidental to who they are. This is only redoubled given his task as a Navigator results in his sense of self is often nowhere near as confined and limited by the more humanoid scale of naturals and even many other synthetics.

He is, despite the difficulty in easily understanding naturals, somewhat curious and driven to try and comprehend them. Given his function he describes this as a necessity, after all the crew of a ship is not always wholly synthetics, however, in truth there is a spark of interest in the other that is not simply functional. Alex has reflected on why this might be so, and suspects - typically - that it is a consequence of his function if not entirely functional in nature. He is more often than not inhabiting a body that was designed to venture into the most ‘other’ and ‘unknown’ place possible, space, it is natural that curiosity be a consequence of this.

Alex is not prone to any overt displays of emotion, indeed he is noted for a consistent and calm demeanour even in the most high stress and life-threatening circumstances, however, this does not make him passive or indolent. He can be fierce and high-spirited, driven to succeed and overcome the odds, and utterly committed to protecting those who have been placed in his care. Yet this never manifests as childish petty desires for masculine violence, he is peace-loving, thoughtful, bold, and without darker motives or baser instincts.

The seed that would become Alex 1274 was generated in the Synth Plant in Dawn City on Sirris VI in the final months of YE 41. The semi-random selection of traits for Alex 1274 emphasised a calm yet fierce individual driven to protect others in their service to the New Dusk Conclave (NDC). Over the course of Alex’s manufacture in the BW-E-2 Anima System and the subsequent creation of his physical body all necessary knowledge and skills needed to function in the military. As his personality demonstrated the right aptitudes and instincts for the Navigator function his skills and knowledge were expanded to encompass what was necessary for it. His personality created his function, but his function necessitated his personality, and even today Alex wonders which really came first.

While some of his synthetic peers were eager to leave the Virtual Reality (VR) learning environment and begin their duty for real; while others were more cautious about the challenge of interacting more frequently with naturals and the challenge of working with those who didn’t have the same commitment to their function to the NDC. Alex for his part was neither hesitant nor eager, he focused himself on assimilating as much information and education as he could from the VR environment. Easily it was socialising and connecting with naturals that he found the most difficult, but he didn’t let that diminish his determination to work on that skill. He knew it would be necessary, and anything that was necessary he would do without complaint. It was this focused, purposeful, and considered approach that cemented his assignment to the position of Navigator.

Alex 1274 walked out of the Synth Plant in Dawn City on the first day of the first month of YE 42. Naturally there was no question of where he would serve the NDC, and immediately joined his fellow cohort members in the Warrior Cadre. Basic training saw his skills and knowledge reaffirmed and expanded, and most crucially he began to find bonds and connections within his cadre. Gerhard, an Abwehran, became Alex’s closest confidant and most frequent point of contact when trying to understand naturals. Gerhard was forthright, direct, and bold to the point of brash and, at least as far as Alex was concerned, spent far too much time trying to find something amusing and getting others to laugh. But he misses even that now.

After completing basic training Alex was assigned as one of the Navigator Operators aboard the NDS Auroch, a NDC-SS1 heavy frigate, under the command of Captain Mark Dressel - a veteran from Section 6 and the earliest days of what would become the NDC. The Auroch had been Captain Dressel’s first command and he had declined offers to command other vessels. She was surprisingly fast and agile, even for a class that often proved more rapid than their size might suggest, and she was referred to fondly by her captain and crew as the ‘Old Heifer’. Captain Dressel became a figure of admiration and inspiration for the fresh-faced Alex, as the old man was sure and steady and never prone to either excesses of solemnity nor levity. He was fortunate too that Gerhard had been assigned to the Aurorch as one of its U-1 Prototype Variable Mecha pilots.

The defining and transformative moment in Alex’s life would come in YE 43 with the Battle Of Glimmergold. The NDS Auroch was assigned to Patrol Fleet 2 for the battle. The debrief noted that the NDS Auroch performed ably, screening larger vessels essential to the battle, and despite extensive damage resulting in depressurisation and the loss of its captain and a large number of its bridge crew continued to perform its duty until the battle’s end. Alex prefers to remain relatively quiet on the exact feelings he has surrounding the circumstances, and though he wears his commendations openly, privately he considers them memorials more than awards; reminders of the cost of duty, and of the need to not fail those placed in his care again. Even if rationally he knows he did all he could, he does not ‘feel’ that rational thought, and a feeling is harder to remove than a thought.

For his service in the battle Alex 1274 was promoted to Lieutenant 2nd Class and was reassigned to the NDS Deiphobos, a Erebus Class Missile Frigate. Captain Alice Limburg soon came to rely upon her new lieutenant, finding his calm and steady demeanour particularly useful as the other Operators on her staff were far more energetic, aggressive, and forthright. Over the coming years Alex found himself falling into a routine amongst the Deiphobos’ crew, he was the voice of reason and focus, and served ably as almost a second-officer even if not officially in that role. Alice was insistent, however, that Alex should continue to grow and foster his capacities as she saw potential in him. As such it was her who suggested him for an officer exchange program with the Star Army of Yamatai. Alex 1274 accepted the offer into the program near the end of YE 46.

Alex 1274 possesses the same physical aptitudes and capacities of all Operators, such as being able to lift up to 600 kilograms and jump 20 metres, and so on.

Alex was imprinted with Trade (language) during his manufactured growth, and has furthered his facility with languages since then having learned Abwehran (language) during basic training thanks especially to his friendship with Gerhard. He also undertook study of Yamataigo (邪馬台語) during his first year of deployment aboard the NDS Auroch as it was a sound choice given the friendly relations between the NDC and the Yamatai Star Empire.

As would be expected of Alex given his role as a Navigator, and being an Operator, he is exceptionally proficient and familiar with the BW-E-2 Anima System and with all of his own internal systems - such as the NH-M-M2 "Orchestra", NH-M-M3 "Crescendo", ECS, and so on. Along with, of course, familiarity with all common pieces of technology used with the NDC in a civilian or military capacity.

As a Navigator Alex has particular proficiency through both his training and creation, as well as direct experience since leaving the Synth Plant, with the complex task of possessing a whole starship. Able to comfortably and confidently access and manage impossible amounts of data, encyclopaedic databases on his ship’s capacities and limitations, conduct complex mathematical calculations for ballistics or to account for the complicated astrophysics of interstellar travel or stellar combat, and all while acting as the nexus of all ship communications both within and beyond the vessel. It is a task that he relishes and it is the totality of who he is, indeed while possessing the vessel he considers himself more entire and whole than when he is not.

Alex has completed basic training in both unarmed and the basic weapon training of the NDC so that he is not defenceless should this be required of him.
