The Ms-P3505 series Hyperspace Fold Drives are a set of long-range faster-than-light propulsion systems intended primarily for use aboard starships, designed and manufactured by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards. They were first introducted in YE 35.
The Ms-P3505 Hyperspace Fold Drives (HFD) use an internal supply of exotic matter and a set of powerful quantum distortion coils to manipulate the geometry of local space/time, allowing the equipped vessel to essentially pinch off a bubble of normal space (n-space) and direct it through the medium of Hyperspace.
In order to initiate the hyperspace fold process, a starship must be beyond the Hill Sphere of a planet in order to complete dimensional translation sucessfully. Hyperspace drives also have enormous energy requirements, generally requiring a period of charging before each use – the exact time spent charging depends upon the output of a ships power plants, and the maximum range a ship can travel during each individual jump is dependant upon the amount of energy that can be stored within its capacitors or energy banks.
In addition to the basic energy requirements, the time required for a starship to initiate the folding process can also be affected by the processing power of whichever computer a starship utilizes for astrogation. A starship must plot a safe course away from large masses – failure to do so can result in a starship being forcibly pulled back into normal space, physical damage to the ship and the hyperspace drive, or possibly even result in the destruction of the entire starship.
As with the Ms-P3504 Continuum Distortion Drives, a starship can carry other vessels along for the ride through hyperspace so long as all ships can fit together within the maximum n-space field volume that can be generated by the hyperspace drive.
