The Ms-P3500 series Plasma Fusion Drives are a set of high-performance nuclear fusion-based propulsion systems intended primarily for use aboard starships, designed and manufactured by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards. They were first introducted in YE 35.

About Ms-P3500 Plasma Fusion Drives

Ms-P3500 Plasma Fusion Drive Schematic

Ms-P3500 Plasma Fusion Drives (PFD) are a fairly advanced and efficient form of civilian-grade sublight propulsion intended for use during long deep-space voyages. An optimized fusion reactor heats up reaction mass – typically liquid hydrogen – to create a stream of compressed high-temperature plasma in an electromagnetic bottle, which is then directed and accelerated even further through use of gravimetric lensing to produce an incredibly high-velocity stream of exhaust. The plasma stream is released at a velocity of about 13% the speed-of-light, which in turn generates an incredible amount of thrust for a relatively small amount of fuel expenditure.

Because PFD's are reaction drives, they require reaction mass in order to operate; typically a ship will dedicate a portion of its mass for liquid hydrogen fuel storage. In most cases, Murasaki Orbital Shipyards ships possess enough reaction mass for 100-200 hours of continuous operation with all their main drives lit; though the specific amount of time is dependant on each particular ship design and the amount of cubage dedicated to fuel storage.

In order to compete effectively with the various forms of reactionless thrusters able to accelerate ships massing in the kilotonne and megatonne range at 2,000+ gravities, most reaction drives incorporate some form of mass compensator technology – devices which lowers a ships effective mass, allowing accelerations thousands of times greater than would otherwise be possible for a normal reaction drive. In Murasaki Orbital Shipyards designs, these systems are entirely separate.

1)
PSL is an abbreviation for 'Percentage of the Speed of Light'.
2)
Specific Impulse (ISP) is a constant value that is unaffected by the size of a thruster or the number of thrusters installed on a particular ship. Specifically, it is the length of time in seconds for which 1 metric tonne of propellant can produce 1 tonne of thrust. The higher the ISP the more relatively efficient the thruster.
