Tokyo Memorial and Cemetery

The Tokyo Memorial and Cemetary in Himawari-cho, Tokyo is dedicated to the remembrance and history of those who died in the city. Construction began in YE 39 by Kage Yaichiro at the behest of the Yamatai Star Empire's Department of Land and Homes, and it was opened to the public in YE 41. It had been completed earlier, but special care to ensure that radioactive remains were not going to be harmful in the long term delayed the opening of the site.

History of the Tokyo Memorial

After Tokyo became the capital of a new nation in YE 30, the United Outer Colonies, hard times befell the city. Black flag operations by the Tange clan along with continued efforts to subvert the fledgling nation eventually led to a civil war between the Tange-led Black Coats and the United Outer Colonies Peacekeeping Forces in YE 32, contributing to the decline of the nation and allowing the Sfrarabla Mishhuvurthyar Xhrafuklurp (SMX) to attack Tokyo directly. The city was heavily damaged and irradiated in places and the loss of life was enormous.

When Kage Yaichiro contacted the Yamatai Star Empire's Department of Land and Homes to try and use his technology to clean up Tokyo in YE 39, he was given the site for free provided he cleaned up the site and constructed a high quality memorial and cemetery for those who had perished. The remains of the people who were found were to be identified if possible and interred there.

While the cleanup of Tokyo itself went quickly, the massive number of irradiated corpses and limbs were not something that could simply be chucked into the ground. The site's grounds had to be completely isolated from the rest of the ecosystem by making a massive Yama-Dura basin in which the grounds were to fit. Drainage systems which processed out any sort of irradiated materials and lead were installed. Finally, burial sites and coffins that were made of Durandium and Yarvex with an interior lead-lining were developed. Long-term tests were done and the cemetery was finally deemed to post no ecological risk. During these tests, the rest of the museum and grounds were readily completed. It should be noted that Yaichiro went out of his way not to introduce politics into the memorial or its narrative. The facts as they are known are made available, but the point is to honor those who perished without the invitation of strife.

The whole site opened in YE 41, just in time for the return of the Motoyoshi Clan to the planet.
