The Ms-P3501 series Magnetoplasmadynamic Thrusters are a form of high-performance electric propulsion system intended for use aboard starships and spacefaring devices, most commonly as a reaction control system (RCS) used for station keeping, docking and maneuvering. They are designed and manufactured by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards, and were first introducted in YE 35.
Ms-P3501 Magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters (MPDT) are a form of electrically-powered spacecraft propulsion which utilize the force on a charged particle created by an electromagnetic field to create thrust.
The thrusters utilize hydrogen gas, which is ionized and fed into an acceleration chamber where magnetic and electrical fields are generated. The particles are then propelled by Lorentz force resulting from the interaction between the current flowing through the hydrogen plasma and a magnetic field generated by the acceleration chamber, forcing the plasma out through the exhaust chamber at a speed of about 114.98 km/s.
Despite their comparitively lower thrust and fuel efficiency compared to other more powerful reaction drives, they are favored by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards as a form of reaction control system due to their lower exhaust velocity. Most Murasaki Shipyards-designed vessels are equipped with MPDT's for attitude control, station keeping and docking maneuvers where the exhaust of larger and more powerful engines can potentially cause considerable damage to other nearby spacecraft and installations.
