Stinger Chemical Laser Rifle

The Singer Chemical Laser Rifle is an anti-armor/material rifle used by the Iron Company.

About the Stinger Chemical Laser Rifle

The Stinger Chemical Laser Rifle is a chemical laser rifle primarily designed as a means of providing Iron Company Yeoman with a long-range anti-armor rifle until smaller-scale Helstrom weaponry becomes more widely available.

History

Finding themselves woefully short on the man-portable variants of Helstrom Plasma Cannon, and experiencing difficulties in producing more the Iron Company in YE 441) came up with a rather…creative-or suicidal depending on who you ask-solution. Utilizing the original bolt action variant of the Thunderer Heavy Rifle as the basis of the weapon, a chemical laser weapon was created, utilizing the same lasing mechanism as the Helstrom, and the charge packs of the Knucklehead Standard-Issue Battle Rifle. To save on production time and costs, the laser was built directly into the stock of the weapon, with the charge packs loaded into the stocks. The “Ammo” is a special shell filled with highly toxic chemicals that act as a medium for the laser to focus and obtain its energy, often with fatal results for the poor sod on the wrong end, and best of all the whole thing is used as the fuel for the laser.

The bolt and barrel were reworked slightly-still large and heavy, they are further enhanced with heat and corrosion-resistant materials, and a small hole has been worked into the center of the bolt to allow for the lasing of the cartridge. Despite the weapon's initial successes, numerous complaints about the stinger emerged; mainly that the weapon was prone to fouling, as residue from the shell and chemicals would gum up the feed mechanism-while this would be considered a significant issue in a projectile weapon, it would seem odd for a DEW. Unfortunately given that the weapon uses physical ammo-a malfunction in the field could very well prove fatal as it could potentially inflict severe if not fatal injuries should the ammo's casing be damaged. The bolt itself is also heavy and prone to sticking even when clean. The use of physical ammunition also complicated things on the logistical end. Early models of the rifle were also prone to failure or detonation as the system was still suffering teething issues in the materials department and was subject to excessive wear from corrosion and heat, though this is not as much of a concern as of YE 45.

Appearance

The Stinger Shares its appearance with the Thunderer Heavy Rifle; large, clunky, and very heavy-the barrel is an ugly thing-air cooled, the stock and foregrip are made up of crude yet durable polymer, and the bolt of the weapon is large and heavy-just the way the Yeoman like them.

Discharge Information

  • Muzzle Flash: The weapon has a very brief flash of blueish-green light-3cm in diameter.
  • Retort: A snap-crack can be heard when the weapon is fired-this is the result of the sudden ionizing of the chemicals of the weapon.
  • Projectile/Beam Appearance: The weapon does not have a visible beam
  • Effective Range: Under optimum conditions, it's maximum effective range is 4km, weather conditions may impact this.
  • Rate of Fire: 15 to 30 shots a minute
  • Recoil: This weapon does not have recoil, but the movement of the shooter as they work the mechanism may throw their aim off.

Weapon Mechanisms

  • Firing Mechanism: The Stinger operates much like a traditional bolt action-the bolt is cycled manually, chambering a shell, the trigger is depressed, and the shell vaporized.
  • Loading: The weapon is loaded much like the thunderer-depress magazine catch-pull mag, insert a new magazine, use the bolt to cycle a round. The charge pack is loaded in the butt of the weapon, open the butt up, replace the pack, close, and lock.
  • Mode Selector: This weapon does not have an alternate firing mode.
  • Firing Modes: Manual Bolt Action
  • Safety Mechanism: The weapon has a simple button on the side for the safety
  • Weapon Sight: This weapon has the same iron sights as the Thunderer-Heavy Rifle
  • Attachment Hard Points: The weapon is able to mount a basic adjustable scope or an ACOG scope, it also has a bayonet lug.

Other

This weapon is little more than a stopgap until better equipment can be produced the weapon will be regulated to second and third-line formations to free up Thunderers for frontline troops. Most of the yeoman in question are NOT happy to get assigned these, but the squads are glad for the extra hitting power.
