NAM Assault Shotcannon ASC-01a

The NAM Assault Shotcannon ASC-01a is a short ranged close combat weapon intended to be utilized by Nepleslian armorsuits in close combat situations. Developed in YE 41 by Nepleslian Arms and Munitions, the ASC-01a takes advantage of new technologies to fire a more modern version of ancient buck and ball shots: a large number of high velocity pellets in a cone followed by a heavy slug.

About the Assault Shotcannon

The Assault Shotcannon is a simple and brutish weapon developed by Nepleslia for the purpose of close range combat. Essentially an incredibly short barrel combined with a revolving mechanism with 8 chambers and a pair of acceleration rails, the weapon lacks the size on paper to have the kick it does. The genius of the weapon comes in its adoption of Virtual Barrel technology to create a virtual barrel at the time of firing and artificially extend the length of its acceleration rails.

The Virtual Barrel is created by using a high powered combat laser to ionize the air directly in front of the barrel, then extending electromagnetic fields that shape the plasma into a virtual electromagnetically charged rails. When the weapon's round is accelerated by the weapon's own internal rails, the virtual barrel will functionally extend the time the payload is accelerated for. When in a situation with no atmosphere, the Assault Shotcannon can spit out its own gas to be ionized.

The Assault Shotcannon is very heavy when fully loaded, yet compact. For this reason, the weapon is normally mounted directly to a vehicle or platform, sometimes the chest of a power armor.

Appearance

The Assault Shotcannon is a short, stubby weapon: the largest portion of the weapon is taken up by the revolving magazine, which has a diameter of 30cm 4) . The barrel and firing assembly is far smaller, at only 16.5cm 5) inches long, and roughly circular with a diameter of 60mm6). The barrel itself is flanked by the emitters to create the virtual barrel.

Discharge Information

  • Muzzle Flash: When fired, the Assault Shotcannon produces a spurt of white brilliant plasma that dissipates from the force of the traveling spread of pellets
  • Retort: The sound of the ASC-01a firing combines a short, sharp crack followed by a louder thoom from the dissipating virtual barrel.
  • Projectile Appearance: The ASC-01a fires a cloud of heavy, dull grey Nerimium pellets followed by a single large Nerimium slug.
  • Muzzle Velocity: 2,000 meters per second in atmosphere, 5,000 meters per second in space.
  • Effective Range: 100 Meters before dissipation falls off for the pellets, 500 meters for the slug.
  • Projectile Spread Angle: 60 Degrees
  • Rate of Fire: 20 rounds per minute
  • Recoil: Do not try to rig up a way to fire this unarmored and then do it. You will die. The Recoil is heavy and forces the weapon directly backwards.

Ammunition

  • Purpose(Pellets): Tier 4, Light Anti-Armor
  • Purpose(Slug): Tier 6, heavy Anti-Armor
  • Round Capacity: The ASC-01a carries 8 rounds in a revolving magazine

When fired, the Assault Shotcannon fires a discarding sabot that holds 60 3.2mm diameter, 10gram Nerimium pellets directly ahead of a 30mm, 5kg Nerimium slug. The purpose of this unique form of ammunition and loading is not to break open armor, but to instead directly transfer kinetic energy to a target. That said, while the pellets and slug are more than capable of transferring enormous amounts of kinetic energy to armored targets, they're likewise very useful against swarms of unarmored or lightly armored targets.

Weapon Mechanisms

  • Firing Mechanism: When fired, the Assault Shotcannon first generates the virtual barrel in front of it. Then the rails, both physical and virtual, are charged and accelerate the payload to killing velocity. The revolver chamber then rotates another round into the chamber for firing.
  • Loading: Before a platform mounting the ASC-01a is sent into combat, eight rounds are loaded in order into the revolving chamber, which is then locked behind armor. In battle, this armor can be removed so additional rounds can be loaded in, if needed, but this is not recommended
  • Weapon Sight: The Assault Shotcannon is aimed by pointing the front of the carrying platform towards the enemy.
