Destiny Core

The Destiny Core is a hand-portable module designed to carry the memory and basic processing functions of a starship's Destiny AI, so that it can be swapped from one ship to another, removed in case of emergency, or taken out for maintenance purposes.

History

While Origin Industries has been using removable computer cores in the Destiny AI equipped vessels since YE 30, they were never standardized, and were often difficult to get to, requiring special training and tools, and they were unable to function when removed from their socket. During Origin's YE 45 corporate restructuring and rejuvenation, the Destiny AI's central core was identified as needing major updates and standardization, leading to the creation of the standardized Destiny Core.

Function and Design

The Purpose of a Destiny Core is to house the primary hardware and memory of a Destiny AI for a starship's computing system. While older cores simply did that, and nothing else, the YE 45 update adds in additional functionality, as well as standardizes the appearance and capabilities of the Destiny Core, including backup power for continued operation while removed from its socket, wireless connectivity to allow it to continue to control functions even while removed, speakers and microphones for audio and vocal command and response, a Telepathic signal receiver/transmitter, and even a Volumetric projector.

The heart of the Destiny Core is is an array of ten XS-Type Quantum Computer module sticks, which allow for the AI to run smoothly. In addition to the Computer sticks, are an array of ten Memory sticks which give the core enough memory to operate for over a decade without needing to erase or compress any information. Cooling for the core is handled via a liquid cooling system, normally circulated from outside of the unit, but a small pump allows for coolant flow when the unit is removed from its socket. The Core's backup power is provided by a HONEY PUNCH generator, with a week's worth of fuel.

The inner structure of the casing is made from Durandium Alloy, and the outer casing is made from Ceresium. The Core is also fitted with a Chondrex fabric liner, to prevent spalling in case the casing takes damage. The Back end of the casing contains a KICKS compatible Universal combined computer plug, which allows it to transfer power and data, as well as liquid coolant. The Front of the core has a stowable handle which pops out when pushed in, and is used to twist and pull the core from its socket for removal, or twist the core into the socket for installation.

Appearance

The Destiny Core is roughly cylindrical, tapered a very small amount from front to back, with a pop-out handle on the front (which becomes the top when carried). The rear contains a standardized plug and four lugs to lock it into place, as well as stabilize it when placed on that end. It has a couple of access doors on the sides, which allow internal components, or the fuel supply for the backup generator, to be replaced. The handle is placed on the vertical axis from the front, with a main power switch to its left, and an indicator light to its right. This indicator light can change colors and blink to indicate error codes, or may blink as an indicator if the AI residing in the core is speaking or otherwise communicating.
