Eradani Power Armor

The Eradani Power Armor is the traditional handmade powered armor that are built and used by the Eradani Barbarians of the Valhallan People.

History and Background

The Power Armor of the Eradani is an odd thing. Rather than being made by a corporation they are made by the individual tribesmen themselves as a test of not only technical skills but as a rite of passage to be considered a full adult. This ritual is known as the Armoring; and requires the individual to manufacture, don, and survive its activation and use.

While the origins of this ritual are as with anything related to the tribes shrouded in mystery, how the individual tribesmen go about achieving this is left to that individual1). This means that the capabilities of the armor vary widely, from highly advanced armors wielding a sophisticated array of technologies rivaling any Kikyo-made armor to crudely built suits using pneumatic pistons and gears to augment its wielder.

A good example of one of these armors is the one worn by Beldagor2); a simple suit using a combination of tightly bound fiber-cable bundles as muscle and hydraulic pistons and driven by a combustion engine. While not sophisticated, it is a relatively simple armor and is wrapped in a combination of simple steel plates and thick leather hides for protection.

Beldagor began assembling his suit sometime in YE 42 to begin the Armoring, and it was not an easy ordeal. Venturing into the bowels of an old spaceship with its origins lost to time, he began the long and perilous process of gathering materials to begin the construction of his suit. Nearly losing his life to malfunctioning equipment, strange spacefaring creatures, and worse; he had gathered the components necessary to create the framework of his armor. Carefully, he began to assemble the frame; cutting, welding, and measuring-all while praying to the spirits that his efforts weren't in vain. Gathering the armor was simple enough; steel plating was easy enough to obtain-and leather even more so. Obtaining the power source and muscles was not easy-and required him to once again venture beyond the relative safety of his home. Descending onto a planet known as β€œSteelbane”-many had gone down to this world in an attempt to pilfer it-never to return.

Beldagor was lucky enough to be able to find what he was looking for relatively quickly; a set of old cables and hydraulic systems in a sidecar of a motorbike; quickly pilfering them and the motor he fled the world and was ready to assemble the armor. It was some days before he'd finished, but with a steady hand, the armor was ready. Though the armor suffered a mishap upon activation with a cooling line, he'd activated, survived and utilized his suit, and this guaranteed his ascendancy to adulthood.

Appearance

Eradani armor varies in appearance, but most of them are usually built out of mismatched parts with various hides and strange symbols etched over them giving them a ramshackle, almost junkyard-brawler appearance. Beldagor's own armor looks like someone strapped parts of a power armor to hide clothing.

Advantages

Beldagor's armor is relatively capable, with some of it able to match some lower mid-grade armor in terms of what it can do. It is strong, relatively quick, and useful in his role as a technician as it can be fitted with any number of tools, and the majority of components are able to be repaired using common parts, and the internal combustion engine can be fixed easily.

Drawbacks

The engine in Beldagor's suit is somewhat flawed; it has problems with its fuel pump and tends to generate an excess of exhaust-it also burns far in excess of what it requires for fuel and occasionally is prone to failure and backfiring. The servoes are somewhat exposed as well and require lubrication frequently otherwise they will suffer a malfunction-this also represents a key weakness as a good hit here will end up damaging the system and causing it to leak or even explode-the system can also slow down the user should it be turned up to its maximum lift weight. A hit could also potentially spring a leak in the cooling system. Finally, between the hydraulic system and the servos, the armor is prone to occasionally catching fire due to the excess grease coating the armor.

Getting In and Out

The armor is dawned much in the way one would put on a backpack and a pair of pants Place one's arms through the 'sleeves' of the armor and pull it forward, then dawn the pants, connect the servos to the upper half, attach the breast plate and turn the armor on.

Controlling the Armor

Beldagor's armor is controlled via user movement; a computer located in the helmet attached to sensors located at regular intervals assist in moving the armor and ensuring he doesn't hurt himself.

Systems

Beldagor's own Eradani Power Armor has the following subsystems:

Suit Monitoring System

Located inside his helmet, Beldagor has a monitoring system in the form of a number of relatively simple gauges that show fuel, oil pressure, oxygen, and hydraulic fluid levels and pressure in his armor-it also contains a small LED display connected to a simple computer that monitors the suit's overall status for any damage or malfunction as well as assisting with movement; though this is not always reliable.

Hydraulics System Control and Muscle system

The armor's hydraulics system is fully adjustable; able to be adjusted via a series of nobs, the output for the system can be redistributed as needed, and when run at max pressure, it can move up to 500lbs when coupled with the fiber muscle system but slows the armor down immensely. The muscle system is made out of a semi-conductive polymer that when electricity is run through it they are activated-unfortunately this has the immense downside of producing a lot of waste heat, but this is usually shunted off via the cooling system.

Cooling System

Between the muscle system, electronics, and engine, a coolant system is necessary to keep the armor relatively safe to operate; a coolant tank, usually filled with ethylene glycol, is mounted in the backpack with the motor helps shunt off waste heat-with lines evenly distributed throughout the armor. This will need to be refilled every few months or so, but does keep the engine from blowing out from excessive heat or freezing to extreme cold.

Armor

Beldagor's armor is made out of chemically treated refractive steel plates and thick leather hides-this provides him with good protection against kinetics and even laser weapons; provided he doesn't catch fire, but anything else is going to be trouble.

Sensors

A basic sensor suite effective out to 300 meters has been mounted inside the helmet; capable of thermal, conventional radar, motion, electromagnetic and aethric section, with vision enhancement activated via a brief squinting motion able to provide up to 5 times normal vision, this can also be manually activated by adjusting a nob on the side of helmet. It's arguably the most advanced component of the system.

Equipment Hardpoints

Beldagor's armor has four equipment hardpoints-one the shoulder, one on each arm, and one on the back-while not capable of mounting weapons, they can mount a variety of utility equipment such as a spotlight, cutting lasers, drills, and a cargo mount that can enable him to carry and additional 200lbs.

Camouflage

While it can be camouflaged, mainly by painting it to match the environment, the engine's constant smoking gives away its position so Beldagor doesn't bother.

Life Support

The Suit's life support has basic NBC protection, is sealed against vacuum and has an oxygen tank good for two hours but has no self-sealing capabilities in the event of a breach. It is also equipped with a basic climate control system in the form of heating coils and a basic air conditioning unit.
