Walküre-class Multirole Space Fighter

A multirole space fighter designed by the Abwehrans to replace its older strike craft.

About the Ship

Designed in AF 260 (YE 32) to replace the aging Raubvogel-class Abfangjäger and Kondor-class Jagdbomber, the Walküre is a multirole space fighter designed to carry a variety of missiles to execute a variety of missions.

Key Features

Mission Specialization

The Walküre was designed as a multirole fighter for:

  • Primary: Anti-Fighter/Space Powered Armor Operations
  • Secondary w/ Support: Anti-Ship/Station Operations

Appearance

Smaller than previous Abwehran Space Fighters, the Walküre's compact design is made up of a hexagonal fuselage connected to the cockpit area with a cylindrical connector. On either side of the fuselage are curved piece of armor which not only protect the fuselage from damage, but also hold missile hardpoints and the Magnetoplasma Variable Drives. Both 80mm Gatling Railguns can be found mounted to the sides of the cylindrical connector facing forward while the pair of Micro Missile Clusters are on the aft of the fuselage on a dorsal and ventral set up. Jetting out from the aft of the armor pieces are a pair of radiator fins used to expel excess heat from the engines and reactor.

History and Background

With the Raubvogel-class Abfangjäger and the Kondor-class Jagdbomber obsolescence in AF 259 (YE 29), the Abwehrans have been slow in the development of new strike craft in favor of concentrating on their Escort Warships. However, when the cost factor of defending systems came into the situation, military strategists from the Weltraumflotte practically demanded the design of a new fighter craft.

Many scientists in Kaiserlich F&E could see the pros and cons of a space fighter craft. The space fighter, after all, wasn't a very good design for space primarily because they could be destroyed very easily by a proper warship. But the Abwehran culture had always idolized the romantic dream of a fighter pilot putting his very life on the line for his homeworld. There were also plenty of pilots still willing and hoping to prove themselves on the battlefield as well. Because of this, designers in Kaiserlich F&E began to design a multirole space fighter for system defense.

In the early First Quarter of AF 260 (YE 32), Kaiserlich F&E developed the Walküre-class Multirole Space Fighter. With a revolutionary design using the advantages of space and the newest Abwehran technology, it was designed to survive more efficiently than it's predecessors.

Cockpit

fighter_cockpit.jpg

An enclosed cockpit, the pilot seat hangs out in the center of the cockpit surrounded by a control hub and large Field Emission Displays, which are used to project images of the surrounding space from the Imaging Scanner Package. The control scheme is that of a control stick and throttle set up with a pair of computer keyboards underneath them. This allows for the advantage Abwehran males have with their four arms, though Abwehran females have special applications for one-hand or verbal use. The keyboards in the pilot seat allow for programming missiles and modifications to systems when not in combat. There is also an access way into the fighter's core for repair personnel to access the systems and for the pilot to reach a storage locker.

The main feature of the Walküre's cockpit is its ability to synchronize with a pilot's helmet. Using a pair of optical readers, cameras that read the movement of the eyes, the fighter's computer translates it onto the pilot's main HUD. This allows the fighter's missiles to target anything in the surrounding area without having to turn the fighter to aim.

System Access and Storage Space

A hexagonal tube that reaches back into the fuselage, the fighter's systems can be accessed from there without having to rip the ship apart to reach things. The Walküre's primary reactor is housed in here with an armored box around it. A storage locker can be found just inside the Access so the pilot can store emergency supplies and gear.

Ship Systems

Armored Hull and Hull Integrated Systems

Comprised of standard Strike Craft Hull, the Walküre is covered in a layer of Standard Strike Craft Armor to protect its systems and pilot. There are also sixteen hardpoints located on the armored port and starboard to hold missiles.

Computers and Electronics

The Walküre uses a CU-23 standard computer system loaded with a Strike Craft Virutal Intelligence Model of the Kesslinger Intelligent Operating System.

Communication

Detection

Electronic Warfare

Note: There is space for Electronic Warfare once it has been developed.

Emergency Systems

In the event of emergency, the Walküre's entire cockpit section can be ejected from the fuselage to protect the pilot. There is also a beacon attached to the cockpit to signal for rescue.

Life Support Systems

The Walküre uses a standard Recycling and Filtration System to provide life support for twenty-four hours.

Power Generation

A D-H3 Secondary Fusion Reactor powers the majority of the Walküre's non-propulsive systems, making it cheaper to operate due to using Helium 3. Two solar-charged batteries are also in the Walküre to provide emergency power.

Propulsion

Using two Magnetoplasma Variable Drives, the Walküre is capable of moving in multiple axis. It also has twelve Arcjet Maneuvering Jets to turn the fighter and act as propulsion for the cockpit when it ejects.

Shield Systems

The Walküre uses a standard Hard Bubble Shield to protect the fighter from attack and a Hazard Shield to protect against radiation.
