Hiyori was born on Yamatai (Planet) on YE 23.7.23 to merchant parents. Having extensive exposure to spacecraft from a early age, he took well to space travel and quickly developed an aptitude for star charts and astronavigation, aspiring by his early teens to become a military navigator. With the full relocation of the family operation in YE 38 to what would become the Motoyoshi Colonial Sector, he would make regular outings to the region when not in school to learn the area and the intricacies of trading on the frontier.

Despite this promising start, Hiyori was in for a rude awakening in YE 41, when the Motoyoshi Clan moved into the sector and cracked down on United Outer Colonies remnants. To Hiyori's surprise, his parents turned out to be heavily involved and had their assets liquidated shortly after the Motoyoshi arrival, and his family was forced to arrange a new life for themselves under new identities. This, however, would've required Hiyori to give up any chance at becoming a Star Army of Yamatai officer, so he elected to stay.

Soon, though, he was faced with the consequences of this decision as he was presented with an ultimatum by the Motoyoshi clan: become a client of the clan in all but name, being required to follow any order given to him even to the detrimentof his career, or renounce any pretensions of military service and become a truly indentured servant. Being utterly dedicated to his chosen career at this point, he chose the former.
