At first glance, the first thing somebody will notice about August is his short height. Reaching only 5 feet and 3 inches, August tries to compensate with a stocky, muscular body. He has a defined yet bulky body weighing in at 137 pounds. The other marines often tease him, calling him “short and stout.” August has light skin, not too pale, but not close to tan either. His dirty blond hair is trimmed into a crew cut, which helps bolden his young and boyish features. Along with his blue eyes and slightly rosy cheeks, his face epitomizes stubborn youth. In addition to his head hair, August’s lower legs and forearms sport visible hair. One long, standalone scar can be seen running down his back, along his spine.
Many would liken August to a “little brother.” At times he can be joyful and lighthearted, where he can typically be seen with a big stupid grin. When he’s angry August tends to be untalkative and irritative. Although he can be a bit childish, nobody can deny how hard working he is. In his past, August was deemed to be incredibly average in anything he did by his peers. This experience lead him to try his damnedest to even be slightly better than the rest, despite usually amounting to little. With his perseverance comes inherent stubbornness, though it has been toned down by his marine training. Others might see him as a bit naive, but he is a genuine person.
August is quite friendly, accustomed to having various different friends. Although he can be independent, he usually follows those who excel. He would rather be in the company of individuals who he can look up to, as opposed to delinquents. Sticking up for the little guy is also a trait he keeps close to heart, due to being picked on early in his life. August hates assholes and bullies. He has the skin to deal with a little bit of mocking and horseplay, but anything beyond ticks him off. If pissed off, he has the gall to call people out for what they did, and isn’t hesitant to fist fight.
Though he does have a curious side, August isn’t particularly brilliant or insightful. He’s just about as intelligent and perceptive as anyone else. Evidently, he prefers to act first, ask questions later.
August Sanford was born in YE 21 in Roger Wilco City. Born into the Workers social class, he grew up sheltered from the violence on Nepleslia. His mother Maya is a real estate agent, and his father Gregory an office worker. Youngest of three sons, he was the runt of the family. His short height only emphasized this. Despite being born into a healthy family, August’s childhood would be plagued with spinal problems. Unwilling to let their child grow up suffering, his parents let him undergo various surgeries to replace most of his spine with cybernetics. The cost was hefty, but his family survived financially. And so, the remainder of his childhood played out peacefully.
Growing up into his preteens, August’s brothers outperformed him in every aspect. In sports and athletics his brother March was always 2 steps faster and stronger. August liked watching sports, but never picked up playing as easy as his brother. In academics his oldest brother July performed well in school, topping the grades in his class. August on the other hand just fell into the normal grade range. Playing a game of catch up became the norm. Even among his classmates, nothing about him was outstanding. There was a stigma about his short height and previous spine problems that made him seem weak, even though nothing was wrong with him at all. Tired of the misconceptions, he worked harder in his game of catch up with his brothers. August started working out to be fit like March, and studied diligently to try and match July’s grades. Alas, as hard as he tried, he couldn’t surpass his brothers. Both would graduate and receive scholarships, but years later when August’s graduation came around, none were offered to him.
Ultimately, his graduation took a mental toll on him. Even though he worked tirelessly to be superior to the rest of his graduating class, he still felt painfully mediocre compared to his brothers. August spent a few months unsure of what to do with the rest of his life, not certain if he wanted to continue to follow the shadows of his brothers. His uneasiness soon vanished when he received a NSMC recruitment ad in the mail. It was just an advertisement, but to August, it was new inspiration. While his brothers went to school, he would become a marine. A hero.
