Xirang Gel

Officially known as Compound X7G1-November with a trade name of “Xirang” (息壤, or breathing earth in Trade), it is aShear Thicking Non-Newtownian Fluid (STNN Fluid) developed by Advancer Enterprises' in YE 43. First found within the RHI Type 43 "Megumi" Combat Suit, it entered the market as a stand-alone product in YE 45.

History

Wishing to develop covert subdermal armor for the masses, Advancer Enterprises looked for a number of options to accomplish this. Implanted durandium plating was deemed ineffective due to both the increased mass to the user and the lack of strength from the ultra-thin dimensions needed to keep it covert. Groups of platelets were then proposed as the solution, though the results were sub-optimal.

A chemist by the name of Li Alexander and his team introduced Compound X7G1-November in YE 41 as a medium for the platelets to be suspended in. A shear-thickening fluid, when the area was hit with kinetic energy it would harden and align them in such a way that improved their ability to resist damage. Tests were looking promising within simulations and lab rats that a better subdermal armor was plausible. But it turned out that prolonged internal exposure to the compound was deadly to carbon based life forms.

Broken down by the body's immune system naturally, the particles bioacculmated within both the kidneys and liver of individuals. As the particles did not breakdown in normal circumstances, once the amount hit a certain percentage of mass (unique to each individual), the organs will fail. While replacement of organs are possible, it does not fix the underlying issue of using the product. As such, the compound was shelved and work on subdermal armor continued in different directions.

The compound would have remained shelved until Advancer was acquired by Ryu Keiretsu. When taking inventory of the intellectual property they had gained, a mechanical engineer within Ryu Heavu Industries instantly recognized other defensive uses the compound could be used for. Integrated with suits such as the RHI Type 43 "Megumi" Combat Suit, the compound quickly gain a second life under the trade name of “Xirang Gel”.

Stats

Appearance

Xirang Gel in its natural form looks like a bluish-white translucent liquidy gel. When hit with kinetic energy, it near instantly (depending on the amount of force) turns into a solid red-purple block still matching the shape of whatever it is molded around.

Properties Breakdown

Xirang Gel has the following properties:

  • Upon impact, it hardens near instantly to the hardness of Titanium. Less kinetic hits do not really affect it. For unarmed hits from augmented individuals, the gel just cushions the blows to distribute the force.
    • If purpose built nanomachines are embedded, the gel can harden when electrified as the nanites vibrate collectively. An outside control system that can predict impact locations is required. The same nanites also decrease the time to return to a gel state by vibrating at a different frequency.
  • Decent slashing protection, ineffective to piercing damage from melee weapons (energy produced not enough to solidify).
  • Vaporizes when hit with energy weapons. The addition of Durandium Alloy platelets can mitigate this slightly.
  • Tier 1 protection when used alone.
