Navigators in the Scientific Studies Service (SSS) are responsible for providing navigational information for the pilot of the craft. They are also typically the sensor operator/tactical systems operator.

They are trained in planetary navigation, system navigation and stellar navigation. They are trained in the use of the crafts sensor systems, to detect and avoid navigational hazards. They also use them to detect and track other crafts. In the event of hostilities, they feed that information into the tactical systems.

Most navigators are capable of performing basic pilot tasks in an emergency.
