The Stabsgefreiter is a mid-level NCO mostly found at the Platoon, Section, and Flight Level. In a platoon, a Stabsgefreiter is tasked with advising his young Leutnant charge and to mold him into a better leader. In a Section or Flight, a Stabsgefreiter actually commands the unit. In the staff-level, there is normally one Stabsgefreiter in the staff personnel of every Field Officer.

In the Kriegsflotte and Luftwaffen Airships, Stabsgefretiter are often Senior Departmental NCOs. However, two Stabsgefretiter per shift with the best performance ratings among their peers are often placed under the vessel's Feldwebel as his “Bosun's Mates” and act as the Bosun's Assistants. This is normally a honor considering they have to be the best of the best.
