Galactic Horizon 7.8x74mm Designated Sharpshooter Rifle

The Galactic Horizon 7.8x74mm Designated Sharpshooter Rifle is Galactic Horizon’s attempt to modernize Nepleslia’s Designated Sharpshooter Rifle, Model 1. As such it is more commonly referred to as the Designated Sharpshooter Rifle, Model 2, though the company's own internal shorthand for the rifle is to call it the GH-DSR.

They began being manufactured in YE 42 primarily for use by Marine Snipers who were already well acquainted with the rifle’s older sibling. The rifle is designed to be quickly assembled and disassembled for concealment and ease of transportation. There are a few modified variants designed to be used in specific environments, one example being a variant with a shorter barrel used in urban environments by groups such as the National Police Force of Nepleslia. Though the parts all remain interchangeable between these different models, which makes it easy for Marine Snipers to tailor a rifle to suit their needs and preferences.

About the Galactic Horizon 7.8x74mm Designated Sharpshooter Rifle

The GH-DSR is a light-weight precision rifle designed to be quickly broken down for concealment and transportation. It’s a simple modernization and partial redesign of a classic NSMC Sniper rifle, capable of firing the older 7.8x74mm Magnum munitions in addition to the more potent rounds cooked up by Galactic Horizon.

    • GH-DSR – Tundra: Features white/grey furniture, springs designed to better handle subzero temperatures and a hydraulic recoil pad that won’t solidify when subjected to extended use in frigid environments.
    • GH-DSR – Urban: Features a shorter, 12 inch, integrally suppressed barrel.
    • GH-DSR – Torrid: Features tan furniture and a thicker barrel with more aggressive fluting to improve heat management via increased surface area.
    • GH-DSR – Legacy: Mostly standard rifle configuration that makes use of either a repurposed DSR-01 or Diacry-sealed wooden stock and the barrel from a model 1 rifle, with the reinforced barrel’s rear end modified to be easily detached.

Appearance

The GH-DSR is visually very similar to its older sibling though the few changes are rather obvious. The rifle’s Steenplast furniture abandons the traditional “hunting-rifle” style stock in favour of giving the rifle a separated pistol grip and folding stock, it has a much shorter front end and stops just ahead of the rifle’s chamber rather than continuing along the length of the barrel’s underside. The furniture’s “standard” colour is a matte grey with darker tiger-like stripes to give it a more natural appearance and help break up the visual cues of the rifle, of course it is available in many colour and camouflage combinations but this is simply the “default”.

The majority of the weapon’s metal components are made from Durandium Alloy coated with a durable layer of matte black Diacry-treated paint, exceptions being the firing pin, rifled inner sleeve of the ported barrel and the adjustable two-stage trigger which are made from anodized Skusten. The barrel is affixed to the front of the chamber via an obvious spring-loaded cuff that protects the heavy-duty threading, the free-floating barrel’s exterior features heavy fluting and finally it should be noted that the stock comes standard with a thick rubber recoil pad, with space available to accept a cheek riser should the shooter desire.

Discharge Information

  • Muzzle Flash: A large explosion of gasses out the end and ported sides of the barrel with each shot taken.
  • Retort: A loud crack with each shot fired, along with a supersonic boom when the round breaks the sound barrier.
  • Effective Range: 1,000 meters/1,093 yards to 2,500 meters/2,734 yards depending on ammunition.
  • Rate of Fire: Depends on how fast the user can cycle the bolt.
  • Recoil: Generally heavy though not painful if a thick recoil pad is used, the more devastating ammo can be rather unpleasant if used extensively.

Ammunition

Information related to what munitions this rifle is designed to fire.

Galactic Horizon 7.8x74mm Magnum/7.8x74mm Magnum Damage Quickchart
Type Purpose
7.8x74mm Magnum Tier 3, Heavy Anti-Personnel
7.8x74mm Hydra Magnum Tier 3, Heavy Anti-Personnel

Weapon Mechanisms

Information related to how the rifle functions.

  • Firing Mechanism: Bolt-action. The bolt-handle is rotated up 90 degrees and then slid back, this will clear the chamber and re-cock the firing pin before it is returned to the forwards position, stripping a round from the magazine and chambering it before the user pivots the bolt-handle down 90 degrees.
  • Loading: An ambidextrous magazine-release paddle is positioned just ahead of the rifle’s enlarged trigger-guard, pressing it forwards allows the magazine to be removed and replaced. Magazines may be topped-up before they are depleted by passing rounds down through the ejection port.
  • Mode Selector: N/A
  • Firing Modes: Single
  • Safety Mechanism: Three position, ambidextrous safety on the rear of the bolt. In the rear-most position neither the bolt nor trigger can be manipulated, in the middle position the bolt may be manipulated but the trigger will not move a hair, and in the forwards position both the trigger and bolt may be manipulated. Additionally the rifle’s trigger is two-stage and adjustable5), meaning the rifle will only fire when both the trigger and the trigger-housed lever are properly depressed.
  • Weapon Sight: The rifle makes use of a fixed, hooded front sight blade and a fully adjustable, folding aperture-style rear sight piece. Both are enhanced with combined fiber-optic/tritium elements for improved visibility, though ideally the rifle is used with a high-powered scope.
  • Attachment Hard Points: A sturdy rail runs along the length of the receiver and it is designed to accept a wide variety of precision optics, in addition to this the front of the rifle’s furniture has a designated bipod-mounting lug and a sling point that correlates with one on the rear of the rifle’s stock.

Other

The GH-DSR is designed to include a few little features not immediately obvious to those not intimately familiar with the rifle. These include a threaded cap on the underside of the M3-style pistol grip that covers a small storage cavity, a rifle cleaning kit stored beneath the rifle’s recoil pad in its stock, and a replaceable bolt that can easily be swapped between left and right-handed configurations with no tools required.

The rifle makes use of polymer magazines with Durandium Alloy feed lips, and the most commonly used five-round magazine is designed to sit flush with the base of the rifle’s body when properly seated in the magwell.

Assembling the rifle is as simple as removing the threaded caps from the barrel and receiver, pushing the rear of the barrel into the front of the receiver and then fastening a spring-loaded cuff, to disassemble the rifle one simply reverses the process. The hinge for the stock is unlocked by squeezing two buttons, one on the underside and one on the top of the hinge’s axis, allowing it to pivot 180 degrees until it locks into place on either side of the rifle’s receiver or is fully extended.

Despite being ported the rifle’s barrel can still make use of muzzle devices such as suppressors and beefier muzzle-breaks thanks to the threading behind the vents, though it generally is not designed to be used with muzzle devices for the original DSR-01 without also using a previous-generation barrel, previous generation suppressors will still work perfectly fine with the newer barrels however.

Pricing

Galactic Horizon provides these rifles solely to the Star Military of the Democratic Imperium of Nepleslia as well as the National Police Force of Nepleslia and as such they are not commercially available.
