When an officer reaches this rank, larger opportunities open up for her. They are normally given command of larger, more powerful vessels within the fleet command structure. But on rare occasions, they can also be given the honor of becoming a 'Flag Captain'. The Flag Captain is the commander of a Group Commander's flagship. This officer is normally in charge of ensuring a squadron follows their group commander's commands and thus freeing the group commander's time to devote to tactical thinking.

In the area of strike craft, Hauptmanns are normally placed in charge of Strike Wings of Carriers and Space Stations.
