The lowest level of Field / Flag Officer and the only one that is normally on the front lines, Oberstleutnants are often considered to “straddle the line” between Command and Field / Flag. In the Landwehr, OberstLeutnants command Battalions, which give them a variety of troops to command. In the Kriegsflotte, Oberstleutnants in up commanding Task Groups (groups of three Frigates) and are given much leeway in how they act under orders. In the Luftwaffen, OberstLeutnants are inevitably given either command of an Air / Carrier Group¹⁾ or command of a Patrol Group of two Aerial Cruisers.
