The 40mm Super format was designed in YE_40 for use as a mostly self-contained weapon system that allows for a wide range of payloads to be fitted for a small weapon system.
The 40mm Super rounds are all designed to have their own propulsion system, and to have a triggering mechanism on the back which can be activated by a simple mechanical trigger. The self-propelled nature of the round means that the launcher is really only needed to trigger the round, and to provide a sturdy launching point. Since the round is not turned 'on' until it is triggered, it is reasonably secure against EMP and other interfearance.
