History

The Model 44 Standardized Starship Bridge is the nerve center of any Iron Company vessel; prioritizing practicality, durability, and reliability over high technology; generally favoring mechanical interfaces. While some might see it as archaic it has the advantage that most of the time the equipment on board can fixed quickly with hand tools and the occasional bout of percussive maintenance ensures that any problems can usually be sorted in short order and get the ship moving again.

Layout

Iron Company Standardized Bridges are, much like the rest of the Standardized Compartments little more than armored boxes with equipment stuck in them. The layout is as follows:

  • Command: This consists of the captain's command chair, heavily armored and well cushioned. Used primarily by the Captain to oversee operations with a direct link to the ship's intercom system.
  • Navigation/Targeting console: Used for both navigation and targeting for the gunnery crews, this consists of a combination of digital displays, physical charts with physical navigation tools, and some, albeit minimal holographic displays, normally used for relaying mission-critical information.
  • Helm: The Iron Company uses analogue controls; I.e; levers, cranks, , adjusting maneuvering thrusters, throttle, etc;. This can actually be just as, if not more effective than digital controls, but has the drawback of increasing pilot workload, sometimes requiring more than one member of the crew to operate vessels.
  • Engineering/Systems: Used to monitor power output, life support, damage, etc; this console has the ability to, if the engineering crews are unable to, manually adjust power distribution, adjust life support; etc; arguably one the most important parts of the bridge. Also includes clearly marked red levels for sealing breaches, activating fire suppression, etc, and features alert lights allowing yeomen to react to ever-changing situations.
  • Tactical: While Company Vessels do normally have individual gunnery sections, the Tactical Station has controls that, if a gunnery crew is incapacitated or a ship is under-crewed, can take control of a weapon system and sight it in; while they do have some sighting capabilities; they are partially dependent on Navigation/Targeting to be able to be used to their fullest effect.
  • Communications: This monitors and directs inbound, outbound, and internal communications traffic on the ship.
