The standard cargo area has white padded walls and a metal floor with plenty of tie-down points. Some cargo bays may have parts of the floor equipped with strips of rollers so that crates can be moved easily up and down the length of the bay.

They typically have a ceiling mounted crane that can move the length of the bay. This is used to reposition crates of cargo within the bay. It is normally operated by a crew member at the control console, or operated by the ship's computer via voice command.
