The newer organic designs of ships utilize the ship's organism itself as their life support systems. They take in carbon dioxide and other parts of the air through the membrane of the corridor walls, and break it back down in to it's components to be recycled primarily as carbon and water. It also regulates things such as the humidity of the air, and the temperature of the ship in general (though those two functions are typically disabled during combat).
