An Umatli (kilt) is the main garment that Poku'vonai wear. Properly fitted it secures at the waist, and hangs down to the center of the knee. The Umatli is placed starting at the hip and wraps around the wearer. It is secured with either ties (fabric or cord), clasps or pins.

To be properly fitted, the length of the overall Umatli is equal to the twice the distance from the wearer shoulder to the ankle. This allows the Umatli to wrap sufficiently around the waist. The ends of the Umatli are angled for appearance. When worn properly, the Umatli is wrapped around the body in a counter clockwise fashion. It should end with the end of the Umatli aligned with the left leg.

All of the edges of the Umatli, are either hemmed, or done with piping (a type of trim or embellishment consisting of a strip of folded fabric inserted into a seam to define the edges).
