Chelti Light Infantry Armour

A light, but fairly sturdy armor used by chelti light infantry and other troops that need to move fast distinct among other armor by its scale mail like appearance. Made primarily from ceramic composite discs and strong silk it's extremely flexible, but hits tend to sting. It's commonly available and is not uncommon among certain groups of civilians.

Damage Capacity

See Damage Rating (Version 3) for an explanation of the damage system.

  • Body: Tier 2, Medium Anti-Personnel SP
  • Shields: N/A (Not built-in)

Construction

Circular composite ceramic discs layered in rows form the first line of protection, embedded upon a extremely resilient silk layer farmed naturally from a native chelti animal with an under-layer of padding for comfort. This simple but protective construction makes for a very flexible and effective body armor. However the flexible nature of the armor also means that hits tend to sting. A lot.

The discs are molded individually from a variety of materials to ensure they remain strong enough to absorb impacts, but light enough to be used in body armor. The discs have a rough, bumpy texture on the outer surface but feel smooth on the sides, the disc is treated with protective layers to avoid erosion, chemical saturation, and to help the discs slide against each other fluidly.

The silk forms a protective layer against shrapnel or other harmful bits that might fit between the scales at the right angle. It also forms a second line of defense if the ceramic discs above are compromised. While the natural silk is strong, it cannot disperse the point of impact so hits from some weapons can still cause major damage.

The last layer is a non-newtonian gel that works both as padding and a final line of defense as the gel hardens to sudden impact. If penetration does occur then the gel is dispersed through the wound by the force of the projectile and helps form clots and protect against infection to allow faster healing in hospital.

The Armour

Like all chelti armors the light armor is broken into independent sections for the different parts of the body, namely the torso, arms, and legs. It is secured with a mixture of both straps and clips around the body and can be given additional anchorage via specialized harness.

Well cared for armor will not make a noise as it bends, however poorly maintained and worn armor will start to creak as discs begin to rub badly.

Torso

The thin silk and ceramic discs give good trunk flexibility to the wearer. Two straps extend from the shoulder and wrap around the upper arm, not only for some additional protection but to help secure part of the arm armor as well.

Arm

Helpfully anchored by the additional strap from the shoulder as well as its existing anchorage, this part of the arm is covered from the outside, but the tender inside of the arm is exposed by a narrow gap to help ease weight and encumbrance. The protection extends down to the elbow,

Rigged into standard forearm mount, the inside of the forearm has the standard chelti receiver slot and brace, while the outside is protected by the same silk and disc construction as the rest of the armor.

Legs

The flexible nature of this armor allows it to cover the buttocks and encircle the hips down to the knees.

Unfortunately the armor is not so flexible to cover the groin area with its wide angles of movement and acute angles, a hardened ceramic plate covers the vitals of this region, closing an otherwise considerable weakpoint.

Braced under the knee, this armor protects the wearer right down to the ankles.
