With the development of the Sectional Defense Field for their space craft in AF 260, the Abwehrans turned toward development of planetary shield systems. While the development of a shield system to cover an entire planet was highly unlikely, Shields for specific locations seemed highly likely using the same system developed for the Sectional Defense Field. During the Second Quarter of AF 260 (YE 32), Kaiserlich F&E developed a version of the Sectional Defense Field for individual military bases. This system would cover the base in the umbrella of an electromagnetic field to protect it from attacks caused by orbital, aerial, and ground forces alike.

Named the Umbrella Shield System, it took the standard design of the Sectional Defense Field by using multiple generators to create sections of force fields that would mesh together to create a dome of energy. Instead of just one generator per section however, each section of the Umbrella Shield System required two generators. One generator would be located in the exact center of the facility while the second generator would be buried on the facility's perimeter. With a ring of generators around the facility and a central generator room, the Umbrella Shield System would create a complete dome from the ground to about 80 meters above the facility's rooftop.
