The lowest level of Non-Commissioned Officer, Obergefreiter's are often placed in command of Infantry Squads for the Landwehr. In specialized regiments, they may serve in non-command roles. In the Luftwaffen, Obergefreiter's are often the lowest rank of soldier allowed to pilot a combat aircraft.

In the Kriegsflotte and on Luftwaffen Airships, Obergefreiters are often placed in charge of a shift for their departments.
