Cobaltvale: Mining Guild Employee Residential Zone
Cobaltvale is the site of a residential zone, used by the Mining Guild, and it is a modern, efficient, and comfortable living space, that balances the industrial might of the Mining Guild with the needs and well-being of its employees. The zone is a blend of futuristic architecture, natural beauty, and smart technology, designed to support a thriving and connected community.
Geography, Climate and Environment
Cobaltvale is the residential zone of the Mining Guild on Sirris VI, distinct from Obsidian City, the capital of the New Dusk Conclave. Unlike Obsidian City, which is built on an artificial island, Cobaltvale is located further inland, though it remains within the safe green zone, protecting it from Sirris 4's dangerous megafauna.
The region experiences extreme seasonal variations in temperature, with shifts between intense heat and cold, typical of Sirris VI's climate. However, the humidity and sea air are consistent year-round, presenting a persistent challenge. The salty, humid atmosphere accelerates the corrosion of buildings and machinery, requiring constant upkeep.
In response to these environmental challenges, the Mining Guild's Engineering Corps has developed innovative environmental protection shields. These shields are designed to minimize the corrosive effects of the sea air, ensuring the durability of infrastructure and improving the quality of life for residents.
Sustainability
Cobaltvale incorporates eco-friendly architectural designs aimed at reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. Many of the buildings feature solar panels integrated into their structures to harness renewable energy, while green roofs help to regulate temperature and reduce energy consumption.
The zone's waste management and recycling systems are highly efficient, ensuring minimal waste and encouraging responsible resource use. In addition, several residential towers are adorned with vertical gardens, which not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also improve air quality by introducing natural plant life into the urban environment.
Nighttime Aesthetics
In the evenings, the streets are illuminated by a combination of soft blue and white lights, casting a calm glow over the entire zone. Neon signs mark various shops and recreational facilities, giving the area a slight retro-futuristic vibe. Discreet yet effective security systems are in place throughout Cobaltvale, ensuring protection for the residence
History
In early YE 41, the Mining Guild was established, leveraging new technology that allowed the corporation to begin extracting valuable metals and gemstones for profit. This newfound wealth enabled the Guild to expand beyond its initial operation at the Obsidian Mines, the first mine opened by the organization.
However, before this expansion could take place, the Guild executives identified a pressing need for a dedicated residential zone for their employees. Many workers lived near military installations, and the regular training exercises of the New Dusk Conclave's Duskerian Legion and naval personnel caused disruptions, particularly for families with young children. Additionally, employees faced various other living challenges related to their proximity to military zones.
In response, Lady Nyx Pine, daughter of the late Jack Pine and Lady Isabelle Pine, acquired land, reserving some for personal use while gifting a portion to the Mining Guild. This land became the foundation for Cobaltvale, a purpose-built residential zone designed to provide a comfortable and suitable living environment for the Guild's employees.
As Cobaltvale was a residential zone rather than a full city, its construction was completed relatively quickly, allowing employees and executives of the Mining Guild to move in soon after. The Kurosaki sisters, Astrid Kurosaki and Aeta Kurosaki, were the last to relocate, as they prioritized ensuring their employees were settled comfortably before moving into the apartment reserved for their family.
Later, upon reuniting with their long-lost brother, Vilkas, he joined them in the same apartment. Cobaltvale offered a peaceful living environment for its residents. While the distant sounds of military training from nearby installations could still be heard, residents could now close their windows to minimize the noise. The primary challenge faced by the inhabitants was the planet's intense heat, which remained an issue due to the lack of advanced cooling technologies at the time.
YE 46 Cobaltvale Review
In an early phase of Cobaltvale’s review, Vilkas Kurosaki reunites with his sisters, Astrid and Aeta Kurosaki, marking a significant moment for the Kurosaki family. To celebrate, the siblings meet at Sunset Grill, a popular eatery owned by Elara Tian, who provided insight into community needs.
During this meeting, Astrid and Aeta discuss their vision for the expansion and highlight areas in Cobaltvale that need enhancement. This discussion plants the seeds for future infrastructure projects, reflecting their commitment to the well-being of the Guild’s employees.
Following the Sunset Grill meeting, Astrid initiates a project to expand Cobaltvale’s amenities and residential options. Under her leadership, the Mining Guild creates eco-friendly housing, recreational zones, and additional services tailored for employees and their families, reinforcing Cobaltvale as a safe, sustainable, and productive community.
Aeta Kurosaki plays a central role, collaborating with engineers to incorporate advanced environmental shields and durability features in Cobaltvale’s structures to combat the challenging climate of Sirris 4.
To strengthen community bonds, Aeta suggests establishing a music band under Secter Media, the Guild’s entertainment division, bringing cultural expression to the forefront. She plans to work with Veronica Stone, head of marketing, to explore musical and artistic projects that resonate with employees.
The MG.S.S. Imperium, the Mining Guild’s command ship, launches with a dedicated Habitat section designed to replicate aspects of Cobaltvale. This mobile extension of the residential zone allows staff on distant missions to experience familiar comforts.
During the review, Aeta separates from her siblings to check on Orbital Essentials, a pharmacy within the community. She fixes the systems, and resets it. She leads initiatives to improve the sustainability and efficiency of Orbital Essentials, leveraging the Engineering Corps’ latest advancements.
Apartment Updates
The apartment review of the Cobaltvale district, led by Aeta, Astrid, and Vilkas Kurosaki, stemmed from the Kurosaki siblings’ desire to foster a balanced and high-quality lifestyle for the Mining Guild’s employees. After the construction of Obsidian City and Cobaltvale on Planet Sirris 4 around six years ago, they recognized that securing not just a place to work, but also a place to live, would increase productivity and loyalty among Guild members. Since the buildings in Cobaltvale were initially repurposed from starships, the early living spaces, while functional, lacked the personal touches and modern comforts the Kurosakis envisioned for their team.
After settling into Apartment 501 in Cobaltvale, the Kurosakis experienced firsthand the layout and design of these residences. They observed certain inconveniences—small kitchens, basic lighting, and inadequate soundproofing—which, though sufficient, did not meet the standards they had in mind for Guild staff. Recognizing this, they initiated an internal review to identify opportunities for improvement. Aeta, with her focus on Guild welfare, was especially interested in enhancing community well-being, while Astrid was keen on ensuring a balance between quality and cost. Vilkas, given his leadership in the Night Guard, wanted the apartments to have a sense of security and community, providing both privacy and peace for their off-duty members.
The siblings met with residents to understand their concerns, meeting frequently with Elara Tian, owner of the Sunset Grill, who provided valuable feedback about her neighbors' needs. Through these meetings, Aeta noted that families required better facilities such as daycares and clinics, while Astrid acknowledged the need for improved safety measures, given the neighborhood’s proximity to the Guild Headquarters.
Following the review, the Kurosakis led a series of upgrades to Cobaltvale’s apartments and communal spaces, implementing amenities such as soundproofing enhancements, improved kitchen designs, and shared recreational facilities. They also invested in community-based enhancements, like a landscaped central courtyard and better lighting to make the area more welcoming. The experience also reinforced Astrid’s trust in Elara as a reliable voice of the community, leading her to regularly seek Elara’s insights on Cobaltvale’s development and future improvements.
The review not only elevated the standards of living for Cobaltvale residents but also solidified the Kurosakis’ reputation as leaders who genuinely cared for the well-being of their employees. Through these upgrades, they fostered a strong community spirit, making Cobaltvale not just a district but a home for the Guild’s workforce.
