Socks were invented by humans in ancient, pre-industrial times and by many other species.

Socks are made form a wide variety of materials that are chosen based on the characteristics of overall comfort, softness, padding, flexibility, strength, durability, moisture handling, and color. Common materials include wool, cotton, and a large range of synthetic fibers. In addition to covering the foot, most socks cover the ankle and some part of the calf. Some socks have one or more partitions between the toes such as those designed for use with tabi or sandals. The most common colors of socks are white, black, khaki, and olive green; however, socks can come in any color, pattern, or design. Some socks are printed.
