After the kidnapping and murder of Abwehran Relief Workers by the Khorsoi Insurgency, the Abwehran Star Empire formed the Khorsovarolor Marine Expedition Force (KMEXF) in order to maintain order upon Khorsovarolor until the local government could be reestablished. Lasting nearly three standard years, between YE 30 and YE 32, the Khorsovarolor Occupation was considered a dark time of the Abwehran Armed Forces (AAF). However, it was also a lesson the Abwehran Star Empire was unlikely to forget.
The first months of the Khorsovarolor Occupation was defined by hit and run tactics from both sides. Both the Khorsoi Insurgency and the Weltraumflotte Marine Corp were “feeling each other out” as they learned each others tactics and developed new ones to compensate. The only good thing about the 259 AF was the fact casualties were quite low. This would not be the case in the following Quarters.
Violence increased during the First Quarter of AF 260, as the Khorsoi Insurgency decided upon more brutal methods of guerrilla warfare. Casualties mount as Improvised Explosive Devices and other traps are used with horrific results. However, most of the casualties are civilian rather than insurgent or Abwehran. As a result, many civilians flee the hostile zones and the Weltraumflotte Marines start setting up Protection Zones for civilians.
Up until mid-Quarter, the Second Quarter of 260 AF was relatively calm by comparison to the First Quarter of 260 AF. While IDEs continued to be an issue, much of them were either disarmed or were found after the Occupation1). It was discovered later that this was all a calm before the storm.
During this time, the commander of the KMEXF, Vizeadmiral Alexander Stommerman, conceived of Operation Broken Martyr. Operation Broken Martyr was a strategic plan designed to neutralize the Insurgency and give everyone the breathing room needed for the Khorsoi to finish reestablishing their government and the Abwehrans the chance to pull out. It was a relatively sound plan that called for two phases. Phase one involved the indentification of all Insurgent forces both outside and inside urban areas as well as the summary execution of all Insurgent Prisoners in custody. Phase two involved the orbital bombardment of all Insurgent Forces outside urban areas and the raids against urban safe houses with no quarter given.
All operations were put into action in the sixth month of the Second Quarter.
From the beginning, Operation Broken Martyr was a disaster. While all sites were identified quickly, the majority of them were empty. The KMEXF was too slow in their execution as the Insurgency and the remains of the Security Forces and Army went on a large-scale offensive. Only the influx of new equipment and Orbital Bombardment kept the Operation from failing entirely.
The fighting continued for another four months before the Insurgency was pacified. Near the end, the Insurgency leadership, held up in an old Missile Silo, prepared to launch Khorsoi's nuclear capabilities upon its own people as well as the Abwehran Occupiers. If not for Kris Black, an Abwehran Marine at the time, going behind enemy lines and disabling the leadership long enough for his squad to disable the command console of the Silo, all of Khorsovarolor would have been the victim of devastating nuclear events.
In the wake of Operation Broken Martyr, the new Khorsovarolor Government signed a Non-Aggression Treaty with the Abwehran Star Empire. With that, Khorsovarolor was an independent nation again and the Khorsovarolor Marine Expeditionary Force was disbanded and sent back home. There is still political instability on Khorsovarolor, but the lack of military force in the system means its people are only a potential terrorist threat than a military one.
