The Variable Launche Tube was designed by Origin in YE 29

The Variable Launch Tube (VLT) is a tube which can vary its size to accommodate various munitions ranging from diameters of 0.5 meters up to 4 meters. The VLT operates by adjusting its diameter through moving the ends of its lining, which normally forms a seam. There are grooves all along the inside, allowing the seam to close properly for the munitions to launch. Due to the nature of the tube, its lining must be replaced after 1,000 launches. The VLT is not a launcher; munitions launched through these tubes must be self-propelled. Due to heat issues, a single tube may launch one munition every fifteen seconds. The rate of fire can be increased by having multiple tubes mounted on one ship.
