The Merchant Spacy is divided into Deck Officers, Engine Officers, and Rated Crew in the deck, engineering, and support departments, as well as their foreman and immediate supervisors. There are also Medical, Science, and Security officers. It is run by the Yugumo Corporation.
In the Merchant Spacy, only officers, or licensed crew, have ranks, unlicensed crew, the merchant equivalent of enlisted, have ratings.
Equivalent to officer ranks in the Star Army of Yamatai, they are further divided by department and speciality.
Deck officers, with the exception of cadets in training, are licensed crew that oversee day to day operations of the ship as a whole and stand watch on the bridge. Chief through Third Officer are command staff who stand watch in the command station of the bridge. The Officer and Junior Officer grades are for bridge crew1), or small craft pilots2) who are not part of the upper command structure. The deck officer currently standing watch on the bridge is referred to as Teichō (艇長), literally “Skipper,” as are the pilots of small craft. Fleet commanders are not responsible for the day-to-day command of the ship they're stationed on, having a Shipmaster for that, but rather with the overall command of multiple ships with their own, subordinate Shipmasters.

Merchant Spacy Security, the Kaihei (海兵, meaning Marines), are Yugumo Keisatsu officers who serve aboard ships, and are all licensed officers regardless of pay grade. Though they are primarily police officers, the upper ranks feature detectives who specialize in investigation, intelligence-counterintelligence, and close protection. Additionally, the Security Department and its officers provide all emergency services on the ship such as paramedic (working with Medical), search and rescue, and firefighting, and are cross-trained as such. The Chief of Security of any ship is a Commissioner of the Yugumo Keisatsu, and the Majors Assistant Commissioners. Bridge officers who stand watch at the Tactical Station are also part of the Security Department, and are of the rank of Lieutenant, Captain or Major. These are referred to as Tactical Officer (Yamataigo: Senjutsu Shōkō, 将校). Cadets are almost solely trainees for bridge Tactical Officer positions. A Sergeant transitioning from supervisor to manager would instead be promoted directly to Lieutenant.

Any future Yugumo Corporation manager should prioritize finding a player with Naval or Merchant Mariner experience to manage and maintain the Merchant Spacy.
