Magathiel Standard Missile Cell

Designed in YE 46 for more substantial payloads, the Magathiel Standard Missile Cell is an expansion of the original Magathiel Mini-Missile Cell concept by Ryu Heavy Industries. This variant is capable of housing larger, high-impact missiles for both internal and export sales. It was introduced in YE 46

About the Magathiel Standard Missile Cell

Named in honor of the original Magathiel Cell’s Elyisian namesake, this larger cell was developed to meet demand for a modular, adaptable missile system capable of handling larger ordnance while maintaining versatility across different platforms. Initially conceptualized as a dedicated launcher for heavy missiles, the Magathiel Standard Missile Cell evolved into a scalable canister system. This system is capable of supporting a wide array of missiles for a variety of operational needs across ground, naval, and aerial platforms.

“Expanding the Magathiel Cell lets us double down on modular firepower without reinventing the wheel.” — Project Director

The Missile Cell design enables users to fit a range of heavy ordnance configurations, with options for horizontal and vertical installations. For instance, a fighter might utilize a 4-cell pod, while a larger craft could deploy up to 64 cells in a vertical launcher configuration.

Appearance

The Magathiel Standard Missile Cell resembles its mini counterpart but scaled up to support larger payloads, with a reinforced casing to withstand the increased exhaust output and blast pressure. It retains its grey, rectangular-cube appearance with side-mounted rails, with a top-heavy clamshell hatch for payload protection. Exhaust channels are positioned on the rear for efficient gas discharge, especially critical in vertical launch configurations.

  • Dimensions: 1,600mm (length) x 300mm (width and height) per cell
  • Weight: 225 kg

Discharge Information

The discharge characteristics of the Magathiel Standard Missile Cell depend on its mounting platform, though it maintains key traits observed in mini-cell models.

  • Muzzle Flash: Vertical configurations produce a visible initial flare on top followed by a bright exhaust as the missile exits; horizontal setups generate both effects from the rear.
  • Retort: An initial deep 'thump' followed by a loud whoosh as the missile’s booster ignites.
  • Projectile Appearance: Varies by missile type; typical appearances include streamlined projectiles with stabilizing fins.
  • Effective Range: Varies based on missile specifications.
  • Rate of Fire: 1 missile per 15 seconds due to the increased size and complexity.
  • Recoil: Moderate to high, depending on the missile thrust and cell mounting.

Ammunition

Compatible with a range of heavy missiles, the Magathiel Standard Missile Cell accepts munitions up to 200 mm in diameter and 1,500 mm in length. The cell's capacity is limited to one large missile (or multiple mini-missiles) per canister.

  • Ammunition: Any missile under 200 mm in diameter and 1,500 mm in length
  • Purpose: Varies according to missile payload and purpose.
  • Round Capacity: 1 missile (or canister of missiles) per cell.

The following missiles are compatible with the Large Magathiel Cell:

Weapon Mechanisms

Operating principles for the Magathiel Standard Missile Cell, including loading, firing, and safety protocols, are as follows:

  • Firing Mechanism: The launcher’s parent craft selects the missile and quantity to launch. Once programmed, the protective hatch opens, and the launch command is sent. The hatch closes after 8 seconds to allow any lingering exhaust to dissipate.
  • Loading: Large canister assemblies containing the missile slide into each cell and are locked via mounting rails.
  • Mode Selector: The parent craft's fire control system determines which cells to activate, allowing for staggered firing.
  • Firing Modes: Capable of launching single missiles or in two-missile staggered salvos, with a 5-second delay between launches when multiple cells are used.
  • Safety Mechanism: Missiles are not armed until programmed and 10 meters away from the cell to ensure safe launch.
  • Weapon Sight: The Large Missile Cell does not have a built-in targeting system. Targeting is managed by the carrying craft’s fire control system.
  • Attachment Hard Points: None

Note: Similar to the mini-missile variant, the Missile Cell can be reloaded from the rear. After accessing the rear hatch, the spent canister is removed, and a new one is slid into place. Reloading is a time-intensive process, even with an autoloader, requiring 20 seconds per cycle for heavy missile integration.
