A surface/subsurface standoff munition and long range sensor platform manufactured by Yugumo Corporation, the Chōuryū Heavy Torpedo was designed by Yugumo Fleetworks and released in late YE 44. Chōuryū (潮流) is Yamataigo (邪馬台語) for “Tidal Current.”
With the development of the Umikagami Subsurface Operations Suite, in YE 44, the subsurface operations it enabled required appropriate weapons and remote sensor capacity. As a modern guided munition is essentially a drone with a self destruct, it was natural to combine the two missions into a single platform capable of carrying out both. It was designed to be launched from the Chōuryū Subsurface Torpedo/Sensor Platform.
A Chōuryū torpedo is a sleek, Durandium Alloy cylinder, tapered at both ends. The front is a rounded ogive that contains the warhead, sensors and supercavitating shield emitters. At the rear is the thrust vectoring engine nozzle and retractable, steerable guidance fins. The torpedo's Magnetohydrodynamic Drive, a pared-down derivative of the Hoshi III Series Multi-stage Turbo Plasma Drives, requires a magnetic fluid, such as seawater, to operate. In similarly dense, but less conductive fluids, a pump jet is used instead. It allows for similar speeds but has a much larger signature.
The control unit and sensor systems are a KAIMON Passage system with the Umikagami Subsurface Operations Suite. The torpedo hull itself is Tier 7, Light Mecha.

The Chōuryū Heavy Torpedo has a variable-yield/variable-geometry high-explosive warhead. It may operate in an unarmed sensor mode, and may detonate for effect in a highly-directed geometry for maximum effect against large targets with minimal collaterality, or an omnidirectional geometry for use against formations of smaller targets. In omnidirectional geometry mode, when exploding under the surface, it delivers the maximum yield set (Up to Tier 9, Heavy Anti-Mecha) in a 20m radius, less one damage tier per 5m distance outside of that. When set above the minimum yield (Tier 0), it additionally does Tier 0 damage for another 10m outside the final Tier 1 radius, enough to stun or kill most small aquatic life or unarmored humanoids.
