Personality: James has a sarcastic personality. He doesn't like danger or being in dangerous situations and will do his best to avoid both. He also doesn't like working hard very much and will try and avoid that as well. He always seems to have an opinion or something to say about what's going on. On the positive side he is very loyal to his friends and when push comes to shove he will go out in dangerous situations for the good of the squad (with some good coaching of course). He surprisingly has a strong sense of ethics when it comes to certain things, such as loyalty, justice, and how you treat others.

James spent the first six years of his life living with his family in New Detroit on planet Nepleslia. Life was hard and the opportunities for work were few. James's father was a mechanical engineer and was constantly competing with many people for jobs in the big city. Finally by a chance encounter and a job interview Darell secured a contract as well as citizenship for him and his family on planet Yamatai. The Alken family found their new home in Tania, a peaceful city mostly inhabited by Geshrin civilians. James enjoyed a more comfortable life in his new environment and pursued things like sports and even JROTC. He ended up going to college for a couple of years in order to try and pursue a degree in History or Yamataian (the language) but with two semesters left to go he grew restless and quit. He thought he would like a more active job, something with some excitement so he joined the Star Army of Yamatai. He figured it would be a little bit of hard work for a while and then he would ease himself into a relaxed leadership position or something. It sounded like a good plan. Little did he know he was in for a rude awakening. His initial test scores were average and the only real stand out feature was his athletics ability so he was put into a physical job AKA the infantry. He made it through training which to him was horrible and figured that had to be the end of it. Little did he know that training was the easy part and that the real challenge laid ahead in his new orders to the Fifth Fleet.

James is familiar with basic radio operation and procedures and can make transmissions to and receive transmissions from other characters through headsets, starships, power armor, and shuttles in both combat and non-combat conditions. James is fluent in Nepleslian and Yamataian. He can speak and write both correctly and efficiently and can write reports, fill forms, issue orders under fire, etc. He is skilled in field communications and is proficient in all rudimentary forms of communication (hand signals, flashing lights, etc).

James received hand-to-hand combat training, followed up with a rigorous training program. He is skilled and experienced in combat both in Yamatai-like conditions and in zero-gravity, with and without weapons. Weapons he is trained in include energy pistols, energy rifles, grenades, knives, and power armor.

James is capable of operating any computer system that uses the Kessaku OS, found on all Star Army starships. He is proficient in entering and/or searching for information.

James received basic mathematics training, to including up to algebra and trigonometry.

James is familiar with how to effectively pilot most ground vehicles. He can make rudimentary repairs to his vehicle. In addition, the character has one vehicle type in which he is particularly skilled at operating. While inside this vehicle, the character can perform difficult maneuvers under high stress (combat, etc). The character is also proficient in repairing this type of vehicle (if given the proper tools and time).

James knows how to survive in hostile environments. He can build shelters, hunt and forage for food, build a fire, etc. The character can camouflage himself and is familiar with guerrilla warfare tactics.

James can understand and give out tactical commands and work with his troop to follow those commands efficiently. He knows the importance of teamwork on the battlefield, has been intensively trained in discipline and morale, and is able to recognize the command structure even while under extreme pressure (combat, etc). The character is able to recognize ambush points. He knows basic math in order to calculate distances, etc, and can use a tactical map.
