The Ms-P3502 series Turbo Plasma Fusion Drives are a set of advanced, extremely high-performance nuclear fusion-based military-grade propulsion systems intended primarily for use aboard fast starships and military warships. They are designed and manufactured by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards, and were first introducted in YE 35.
Like the Ms-P3500 Plasma Fusion Drives upon whose technology they are largely based, the Ms-P3502 'Turbo' Plasma Fusion Drive (TPFD) variants are a form of high-end, highly efficient sub-light propulsion intended for use during long deep-space voyages. As with the civilian model, an optimized fusion reactor heats up reaction mass – typically liquid hydrogen – to create a stream of compressed high-temperature plasma in an electromagnetic bottle, which is then directed and accelerated even further through use of gravimetric lensing to produce a high fractional-c stream of exhaust. Unlike the civilian model, the gravity lensing component in this design is much more powerful; the plasma exhaust stream is released at a velocity of over 93% the speed-of-light – giving the engine comparable thrust to the KFY Turbo Aether Plasma Drives used by the Star Army of Yamatai. Unlike those drives however, the Turbo Plasma Fusion drive's manufactured by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards do not generate a virtually infinite amount of reaction mass through use of Aether technology – a ship that utilizes these engines will still need to carry fuel.
Because TPFD's are reaction drives and require reaction mass in order to operate, most ships designed by Murasaki Orbital Shipyards possess storage for enough liquid hydrogen fuel to allow 100-200 hours of continuous operation with all the ships main drives lit; though the specific amount of time is dependant on each particular ship design and the amount of cubage for fuel that is available.
Paired with mass compensator technology that lowers a ships effective mass through Higgs-field manipulation, vehicles equipped with these engines can reach an acceleration of over several thousand gravities easily.
