Looking for ways to duplicate the capabilities of the laminate Mecurite commonly found within Nepleslia, Nepleslian Research and Manufacturing begun experimenting in YE 39 developing their own version. Experimenting with various elements and materials, the corporation debuted what they would call “Neo-Mercuite Nanolaminate” in YE 46.

Spawned out of a need to improve upon the Mercurite anti-radiation shielding typically found in older Nepleslian designs, Nepleslian Research and Manufacturing started work on the Neo-Mercurite around YE 40. Initial prototypes consisted of a monolayer of a material that attempted to provide protection from all known types of radiation. But after less than stellar results, NRM started to apply nanolaminates of different materials when Ryu Keiretsu took interest in the product in YE 43. The usage of different materials also expanded the usage of Neo-Mercurite beyond just radiation protection, capable of assisting with the protection of whatever it is coated on.
Neo-Mercurite Nanolaminate aims to replicate and enhance the unique properties of the original mercurite with advanced nanotechnology. This section delves into the composition, properties, and application methodologies of neo-mercurite, highlighting its significance and utility across various domains.
In its “natural” form, neo-mercuite is semi-transparent with a slight silvery sheen when light reflects off from the surface below it at certain angles. Due to the graphene in the outer layer, Neo-Mucurite has a very smooth feel that is best described as “I know I am touching something, but I feel like I am not touching anything”.
Neo-Mecurite has the following properties:
Neo-Mercurite Nanolaminate is made of similiarly scaled composites and particles that grant its properties to applied surfaces. The Outer Protective Layer is made of graphene that acts as a durable, conductive barrier that provides excellent EM interference shielding. Graphene also offers protection against physical damage. The next layer (EM Shielding and Thermal Dispersion) consists of graphene infused with silver and copper nanoparticles. This layer utilizes the electrical and thermal conductivity of silver and copper nanoparticles dispersed within a graphene matrix. to enhance neo-mecurite's ability to shield against EM radiation and efficiently disperse generated heat.
The UV and Broad Spectrum EM Absorption Layer underneath is primarily made of common Titanium Dioxide (TiO2). The titanium dioxide is effective in absorbing UV radiation and can also contribute to the broader spectrum EM shielding. The next layer is the High Thermal Conductivity Insulation Layer made of Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN). The h-BN serves as a thermal barrier, conducting heat bleeding from higher levels away from critical areas while providing excellent electrical insulation. The final layer of Neo-Mecurite is a Structural Support and Energy Dissipation Layer comprised of Graphene, negatively charged magnetic nanoparticles, and bonding material. The main function of the layer is to provide the primary structural support and attachment for Neo-Mecurite.
The standard thickness of neo-mecurite per layer is the following:
Traditionally neo-mecurite is applied layer by layer via an electrostatic spraying process. A positively charged bonding sublayer is added to the surface (or sublayer of neo-mecurite) before temporarily negatively charged nanoparticles for the next layer are applied. This ensures the nanoparticles can properpy orient themsleves to create an uniform and densely packed layer. But this is a time-consuming process that can take days with multiple drones to apply and cure each layer. 1 liter of neo-mercurite can cover 166 square meters.
With the introduction of multistruct technologies, it is possible to 3D print the nanolaminate directly bonded onto the surface. The time is vastly reduced to a single day and neo-mecurite is easier to repair with a Ministruct preloaded with neo-mecurite and the right programming.
Neo-mercurite's advanced composition and application methodology confer it with a wide range of capabilities, including exceptional protection against thermal, electromagnetic, and radiation threats. Its versatility makes it suitable for a variety of applications, from spacecraft hulls and military armor to electronic shielding for sensitive equipment.
