Sushi

Sushi is sold and made all throughout the Yamatai Star Empire.

The sushi chef is a respected occupation in Yamatai (Planet). Sushi can be found from vendors, starships like the YSS Eucharis, as well as restaurants such as Aoi Hasu (Blue Lotus) and Sea Of Plenty. There are Star Army of Yamatai and Yamatai-specific rolls and cuts that will be identified below. There are varying prices for this type of food depending on who is making it and where. The making of sushi is an art, if practiced well.

Price: 3 KS for a roll of decent, regular sushi. See restaurant menu pages.

Preparations

There are three main ways of preparing sushi: nigiri, sashimi, and rolls.

Nigiri

Nigiri is a form of sushi in which the sea animal meat, often raw but sometimes seared or cooked, is placed on top of a hand-pressed bed of, usually, white rice. Black or brown rice can be substituted for the white rice, but no other grain or otherwise is used in this preparation. The rice and sea meat may be joined with a belt of nori, which is dried seaweed. The cuts are sometimes lathered with liquids, such as soy sauce or ponzu, which is a citrus-based and watery sauce. Traditionally, the only toppings would be wasabi or soy sauce, but modern times have made some new nigiri toppings see more widespread use. They are the same as those used on sashimi.

Sashimi

Sashimi is simply the meat of the sea animal, which is splayed out after being thinly sliced by the chef. The splayed meat is sometimes topped with newer additions such as chutneys, chimichurri, or tapenade.

Rolls

The meat of the sea animal is wrapped up in this preparation, either in a cut or hand roll. A cut roll is cylindrical and a chopped grouping of — most often — meat and vegetables, which are wrapped up in nori. The nori and rice can be reversed, with the rice on the exterior and nori within. Some aspect of the roll can be fried, whether it is fried meat within the roll or the roll in its entirety. Sea animal meat will often top the roll. Rolls can be thick or thin and the latter is referred to as maki.

A hand roll is like what has been described, but it is conical and meant to fit in the palm of one's hand. The hand roll's nori wrapper is what is meant to be the point of contact between the meat, vegetables, and rice to the hand.

Flavors

Possible flavors for sushi include:

Extras

There are a few additions to sushi that really make it.

Soy Sauce

Fermented soybeans and wheat are mashed and the liquid is pressed out to make this dark brown and salty-tasting sauce, which is used in conjunction with sushi very often.

Wasabi

Fresh wasabi is a delight! It is green and “spicy”! Often it is mashed into a paste, but some restaurants will serve chopped wasabi on top of their sushi. Many businesses will mix horse-radish and green dye, which is a common but second-rate wasabi substitute.

Ginger

Pickled ginger often acts as a palate cleanser and can be soaked in soy sauce to be eaten that way. It is also used as a way to lather the soy sauce onto the meal by dragging it along the top of the nigiri, sashimi, or roll.

Thematic Star Army and Yamatai Specific Sushi

Below are the names of widely known rolls that are inspired by Yamataian culture and the exploits of the Star Army of Yamatai and its veterans:

Dolphin and whale meat cannot be harvested in any part of Yamatai and sapients may not be consumed.
