Name

Kyosuke's name (恭介 is the spelling for it) is taken from two sources – Kyousuke from Kimagure Orange Road and Uzuki Shitan from Xenogears.

Body

Kyosuke's a scrawny bastard, much like his father. He still has a mild desert tan, though his skin is actually smooth and relatively unweathered. He's not out of shape by any means, but his fitness comes from the life he lived in the desert, and he can only maintain that so much when he is away from it.

His face is a bit round, like a typical Japanese man, and he has brown almond-shaped eyes resting under his black hair. He's got bangs, and though they are generally long, the rest of his hair is short and blended on the sides. It's parted in the middle.

Distinguishing traits

Much like an infamous Taisho within the 3rd Expeditionary Fleet, Kyosuke is at first glance rather bland-looking. However, a deeper look reveals that he really is bland. He has no cybernetic parts, no unorthodox accessories, no strange facial features, no scars and no out-of-place mannerisms. He doesn't seem to enjoy wearing gloves and does so only for inspection. He wears, oddly enough, an analog chronometer on his wrist.

Personality

Kyosuke would rather be home on Yamatai. While “bitterness” about his lot in the Star Army is present, it is usually masked with dry humor and a slightly dull exterior. He is not a rude person, but reaching out for friends isn't really in his vocabulary. He prefers his nights to be spent on a good book and a healthy nightcap. He certainly knows how to lead, however – it's done by giving orders and not putting up with anything.

Alcohol consumption

Kyosuke, like his father, drinks. He drinks a lot, but never seems to get drunk, in part because of his Yamataian body and in part because he knows how to moderate. He's in it for the taste and the dulling effect, not to get hammered. He prefers Nepleslian whiskey to anything else, but will drink sake out of respect for his mother.

He hates beer and finds vodka unsatisfying.

History

Kyosuke was never really fond of home, but it was better than the alternative – going up into the stars to fight with a bunch of war machines and get slaughtered “for the glory of the Empire.” Kyosuke's father never bought into the imperialist concept and living in Malifar, well away from the central government, he could raise his children to think along similar lines. Kyosuke took a more balanced look that involved deeper personal analysis: “My chances of surviving a battle are nil. I think I'll stay at home and work a desk.” So he joined the Star Army in YE 22 and worked in logistics – plot how to move X materials to point A in such-and-such amount of time.

Unfortunately, Kyosuke was good at it. He rose in rank slowly before he was commissioned in YE 27 to command transports. Though he'd overseen a small platoon's worth of soldiers, they all sat at desks like his. Luckily, most of his business was done within East Yamatai, so his Sojourner transport was not taxed by pirates. He was promoted to Shoi and given an Odori.

It was at this point he knew he was screwed.

Once the Odori was given to him, along with a seemingly simple first assignment, Kyosuke was off. Things quickly drowned under a pirate attack, and a surprise waiting for them at the end of their destination. Kyosuke and his crew found themselves the suckers of a plot by two rogue NH-X to escape the clutches of a mad scientist and confines of the Yamatai Galaxy. Through some clever subterfuge they stole the Odori and ran off to a far corner of the known galaxy. From there they took the ship's shuttle and headed away.

Kyosuke and a reshuffled crew chased after them in another loaner, and eventually found his vessel. Now, about the two Mishhu Ghullfrashirv destroyers … well, they eventually turned out to be a farce. Sort of. Kyosuke never really got the whole story.

Family

Ozaki Kyo, “Kyo-dono” to the denizens of northeastern Malifar. At 51, he has lived a good life, one filled with much bashing of heads and the occasional killing. Mostly known as a spry and brash hunter, he is also a part-time marshal. A damn good shot, something his son picked up only partially.

Ozaki Mei, Kyosuke's mother, died late YE 24 in a car accident driving Kyosuke's two sisters to school. She was a beautiful, kind, warm-hearted woman who was very picky about her son's actions and had a sharp mind for numbers. Kyosuke picked this up entirely. She was also a very straightforward woman, confident with her words, where Kyo (and Kyosuke) tend to say little.

Ozaki Eiko and Piko, Kyosuke's twin sisters. At 15, they are just starting to get annoying, but it is obvious they will look much like their mother did, complete with shimmering, straight dark hair and a light line of freckles over their noses.

Skills

Communication

Kyosuke is familiar with basic radio operation and procedures and can make transmissions to and receive transmissions from other characters through headsets, starships, power armor, and shuttles in both combat and non-combat conditions. He is fluent in English and Japanese. He can speak and write both correctly and efficiently and can write reports, fill forms, issue orders under fire, etc. He also can speak telepathically but chooses not to.

Combat

Kyosuke received hand-to-hand combat training, followed up with a rigorous training program. He is skilled and experienced in combat both in Yamatai-like conditions and in zero-gravity, with and without weapons. Weapons he is trained in include energy pistols, knives, and power armor.

Information Technology

Kyosuke is capable of operating any computer system that uses the Kessaku OS, which is found on all Star Army starships. He is proficient in entering and/or searching for information.

Mathematics

Kyosuke received basic mathematics training, to including up to algebra and trigonometry.

Knowledge (General)

Kyosuke is knowledgable about the history of the Star Army and the laws of the Empire.

Public speaking

Kyosuke studied the requisite for public speaking during his training for commission. He's not particularly good at it.

Leadership

Kyosuke's a fair leader, but he is a quiet one, speaking up only when necessary. Letting his subordinates prattle on is something he picked up during his desk job – you can't force people to work effectively. They have to want to. To that extent, Kyosuke tries to be reassuring of new recruits he thinks are worth the time.
