Huron Cynobacteria

* WIP and Such

Huron Cynobacteria are small single celled organisms genetically engineered by the Freespacers in YE 39 for use in life support systems.

Characteristics

Huron is a cynobacteria, an organism that obtain's its energy through photosynthesis. Huron itself is specifically designed for use in space and is very resistant to radiation, vacuum, and water levels. When the conditions are not favorable for the bacteria to work properly it will enter a hibernation state that is very resistant to radiation and vacuum.

With only a small amount of water it is capable of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere and releasing oxygen. The organism is engineered to pull a larger amount of carbon from the atmosphere around it, storing carbon not used in the carbon fixation cycle as a dark carbon powder. The bacteria can also trap basic toxins and particulate from the air.

Use

Huron is mainly designed for use with the freespacer Liquid Ally. The bacteria can survive in the liquid suspension of the liquid ally, and survive off the amount of moisture contained within. As the liquid ally moves around the bacterial purifies the air around it, making it suitable for oxygen breathing organisms.

In a more industrial setting, the bacteria can be used in star ship air filtration systems. With a bit of moisture and a ventilation system generating a steady current the bacteria can be used to purify the air for a ship.

Life Cycle

Huron is a standard bacteria, and will continue to reproduce through cell division so long as the conditions are favorable. Carbon and other particulates can build up inside of a Huron colony, turning the entire mass from a nearly clear-green color to a dark black. Once the colony has turned black it is suggested the bulk of the colony be disposed of (along with the stored particulate) allowing the remaining Huron cells to duplicate and return the colony to a healthy state.

Taste

Don't eat Huron.

Huron provides very little nutritional value, and the toxins filtered out by the organism can be harmful to ingest. However, Huron has been designed to be as biologically inert as possible when ingested. It is technically safe to eat, and has a plastic-like-non-taste. The vacuoles of the cell are designed to be acid-resistant so that the carbon and harmful toxins pulled into these storage areas are not released when the bacteria is digested by living creatures, however cooking the bacteria will release what is trapped inside.

Zinc-Carbon Battery

The Liquid Ally is fully capable of digesting Huron, consuming the older, weaker cells filled with carbon and converting them into a small amount of energy through a zinc-carbon electrochemical reaction. This can slightly extend the life of the liquid ally and help it maintain a Huron colony.
