While the 6.8 x 43mm NAM was conceived as an intermediate cartridge that did perform fairly well at most ranges, actual combat data taken from military and law enforcement forces indicated a need for a larger caliber projectile that offered greater penetration and the formation of larger wound channels, particularly against larger-bodied assailants.
Electing to keep the same case as the 6.8 x 43mm NAM for logistical purposes, NAM decided to simply place a larger 11.5mm or .45 caliber projectile in the existing 43mm case. Utilizing hotter burning powders to close the gap in velocity created by firing a larger projectile out of a same-sized case, the aim of the 11.5x43mm ammunition - affectionately nicknamed “Slugger” - is to provide a large caliber projectile that achieves relatively high velocities in order to provide a very hard-hitting service round at the cost of greater recoil impulse.
