The Heimdall Sensor System is a rare example of what happens when the Iron Company gets something absolutely right: with terrifying results. Development of this system started roughly 10 years before the Schism in BYE 20; designed to be scalable and provide the Company with superb detection capabilities it served as an example of their craft-and only reappearing in YE 45 in any meaningful numbers, though a few were produced before then.
The system is noted for its detection capabilities and range. However, heat generation was something of an issue to the point that any unit-terrestrial or otherwise had to mount a special cooling jacket-keeping the interior where it was mounted in subarctic temperature. It was not uncommon for Yeomen serving aboard these vehicles to suffer from frostbite should the heating in their hardsuits fail. The design was revived by and improved upon Albert Steiner during the Craethel War utilizing manufacturing techniques taken from Kikyo Sector and proved invaluable in sniffing out Asune who had attempted to use dimensional pockets to ambush units and refugee convoys and even proven in the current conflict against the mishu. Unfortunately, the difficulties of producing such a device and their unwillingness to risk it in all but the most dire of engagements ensures that the Heimdall remains a rare sight on the battlefield.
The Heimdall Sensor System works by utilizing in tandem radar, mass/energy sensors, aetheric detection-a must when operating in the sector, quantum primarily used for sniffing out dimensional rifts, infrared, particle sensors, and magnetic/gravitational resonance sensors. The system is omnidirectional and has an active, passive, and Countermeasure, passive mode has a range of 20 lightyears and can detect most craft. Active mode effectively halves the range but is able to penetrate stealth systems.
Countermeasure mode while effective its range is severely limited(3LY) and has a tendency to give away the craft's position as a pocket of space that few if any emissions tend to be a dead giveaway that something is out of place. The sensor system is made from common materials such as silicone, cobalt, and copper and is contained in a tungsten-impregnated titanium sphere.
