Hi! If you are reading this then you are probably new to Star Army roleplaying. Welcome aboard!
Star Army is a big setting with over twenty years of history and a wiki of over a 13,000 pages and just as many images. It is very easy to get overwhelmed by everything that's here. Take a breath and realize that you don't need to know everything or even anything about the setting to have fun. We have cloned soldiers who are expected not to know much about the setting that you can jump right into and ask questions in character about things you don't understand. We have a questions and answers forum where you can ask any questions you have about the setting or anything in it. On our discord we also have a new member help channel where you can get anything that you need. This primer is one of those resources to help you orient yourself in the setting.
This primer is a broad overview of the setting and what you can find in it. We are going to go over the major players and setting elements of the Star Army universe. There are currently four major players in the setting. Yamatai, Nepleslia, Nateshen, and the New Dusk Conclave. They are opposed by Kuvexians, Mishhuvurthyar, and numerous other minor threats.
Star Army pride's it's self on being Military science fiction and Space Opera Role playing. It's useful at this point to elaborate what we mean by those terms.
Military science fiction is a subgenre of science fiction that features the use of science fiction technology, mainly weapons, for military purposes and usually principal characters that are members of a military organization involved in military activity, usually during a war; occurring sometimes in outer space or on a different planet or planets. A detailed description of the conflict, the tactics and weapons used for it, and the role of a military service and the individual members of that military organization forms the basis for a typical work of military science fiction.
Space Opera is colorful, dramatic, large-scale science fiction adventure, competently and sometimes beautifully written, usually focused on a sympathetic, heroic central character and plot action, and usually set in the relatively distant future, and in space or on other worlds, characteristically optimistic in tone. It often deals with war, piracy, military virtues, and very large-scale action, large stakes.
Star Army is not hard science fiction. One common Technology is Aether which gives access to “a universe of effectively limitless energy”. We also have space lasers and shields. Many of the citizens are able to fly or wear a belt that allows them to do so.
One of the cornerstones of Star Army roleplay is the factions we have. Many of them have come and gone over the history of Star Army. Currently, there are four major factions that we roleplay in.
