Short for “MODify UniverSally compatible”, Modus is a skeleton which can be grown to augment the user's own using a course of medication and special equipment over a 30 day course. It includes a large number of perks commonly only associated with power-armour: Enhanced durability, endurance, strength, pain suppression, anti-nerve agent systems, a self-healing central nervous-system and hardpoints both inside and outside for equipment or plating which can be fitted to the user with ZERO surgery and ZERO recovery time, allowing the user to continue life as normal.

Importantly, Modus can be used alongside other internal augmentations and functions perfectly alongside full limb prosthesis (such as arms or legs). Unusually, due to extensive reverse-engineering of Yamataian body-typings (performed by Miles Gunn) a version of MODUS exists for Yamataian use, acting as a bridge for cybernetic systems for the first time.

Modus went on sale in YE 36 and retails for 35,000 KS and can be covertly issued.

Noting a distinct gap in the civilian and military market for custom endoskeletal replacements, Lazarus quickly found ways to adapt the technology responsible for customising special issue constructs into a mass-market idealised less invasive form for mass-production.

Modus is a non-invasive skeletal augmentation which fully replaces the skeleton of the user without complex invasive surgery. The skeleton possesses basic drive potential, inter-dermal mounting systems, an internalised computing and communications system and very importantly is completely reversible and requires absolutely no special knowledge on behalf of the user.

MODUS works by replacing the calcium and cellular deposits of the skeleton (or ultimately whatever target is designated as per species), elements of the musculature and central nervous-system with an artificial biosubstrate system – an artificial collection of cells which mimic the functionality of structol but are sufficiently organism like as to not interfere with the body itself or cause caustic damage.

Features include:

• Altered biosynthetic joints able to withstand intense kinetic shocks and fall damage which would commonly dislocate joints, complete with motor assist able to lock or provide slow intense strength over time (not unlike a Jaws of Life)
• Altered biosynthetic skeleton, able to withstand crushing blows. The skeleton is augmented in such a way that optionally, armour can be added around critical cardiovascular systems, serving as an internalized bullet-proof vest beneath the skin. Areas of the skeleton commonly weak or brittle have also been redesigned in subtle ways to better protect arteries.
• Altered muscle-fibre, designed to operate not only on glucose but also on electrisity alone using a second set of fibres provided a generator is present, essentially overcoming possible issues of fatigue - greatly enhancing the speed of the user. In the event muscles go into spasm, pain receptors are disconnected, muscle relaxants issued internally and primary motivation fed by the synthetic component of the fibre and the skeleton preventing muscle damage while keeping the user functional
• Augmented arteries and veins designed to pump independently, even if the heart is compromised
• Fortified central nervous-system, designed to re-connect and re-knit in the event fibre is damaged while also limiting the maximum expression of pain transmission to the brain
• Enhanced blood-brain barrier, making most neuro-specific toxins and brain-specific chemical agents ineffective
• Hardpoints for custom organs (rebreathers, air-processors, filtration systems) to better integrate them into the user
• Hardpoints for internal generator and battery systems
• Optionally formable external hard-points adhering to a wide variety of cybernetic and power-armour construction and design standards which can be mixed, matched, altered and even retracted and hidden covertly. These same plugs can effectively make a user's body a key (ideal for private custom/one off equipment).
• Communications systems built into the skeleton itself which can be hardware disconnected from any fitted internal computer by the user
• A simple read-only Application-specific integrated circuit for command parsing to be connected to whatever cybernetic augmentations the user may already have

On purchase, Modus arrives in an armoured brief-case designed to block any electromagnetic waves from entering or leaving. Optionally, the casing can be specifically coated to give off a specific pattern under most common scan-formats, making the MODUS package easier to smuggle.

Please note when ordering to specify the specific make and model based on your approximate body mass index and species, being sure to indicate any allergies or contradictions with existing medications.

Out of the box, the MODUS includes the following:

• A large hemetically sealed wrap containing SIM: the Supplementary infusion of metalloids module.

• A number of vials loaded with biosubstrate fortificiator

• A 30 day course of combination muscle relaxants, painkillers and anti-inflammatories

• A receipt for the reverse-kit (which can be issued to a specific address)

The procedure of fitting and using a MODUS is relatively easy, taking thirty days. Life can continue as normal while the procedure is at work. Due to this slow steady approach and a lack of surgery, turnaround times for combat readiness with an extremely low probability of rejection or complication.

The process first begins with the insertion of the SIM suppository module. It is highly recommended that painkillers and muscle relaxants are administered and that the SIM is inserted fresh from its hemetic sealing whereby it is pre-lubricated. In the event it dries out, common water based lubricants are suitable.

Proceeding a basic enema (performed at your own perogative), once the SIM is successfully inserted and plugged, the user now begins the course of included pills which trigger activity in the SIM, causing it to break down and enter the blood-stream appropriately.

It is suggested that the pain-pills and anti-inflammatories are followed as per the guide suggests in order to maintain a steady metabolistic process of the SIM. It is also strongly advised that you switch to a fluid based diet, ideally soups, food-patches or glucose injections as fibre may cause serious problems with the system.

Around the 25th day, the system will begin to form an entry port around the rear of the spine. Not unlike a horn or a tooth, the port will breach the skin. If it does not do so of its own accord, please use the included freeze local and scalpel provided to cut away – ideally with supervision or help from another party. Note due to the newly protected nerve fibre and fortified skeletal structure that causing serious damage to yourself is a minimal risk at this point.

Now, once the terminal is free, link up with your standardised computer terminal. From here, you may customise the number of hardpoints, placement, adjustments to your skeleton (including changes in height, stature, shape, facial features and even the presentation of your biological sex) though please note that the volume of your internal cavities cannot be changed as this would result in serious concussive damage to your primary organs (and as a consequence, this feature is disabled).

At this point, standard hardpoints may grow out through skin (if requested), ideal for interfacing with cybernetic systems or power-armour. Please note that the plugs are standardised, retractible and using newly formed epidermal sphincters, can be closed over the socket in a way which is for the most part concealable.

On day 30, your internal skeleton is complete and the SIM module can be purged – now loaded with waste product replacing the SIM material. The waste-loaded SIM is self-hemetically sealed at the 30 day mark and should be disposed of as bio-waste, ideally incinerated.

Congratulations: your new MODUS endoskeletal enhancement suite is installed successfully.

To reverse the process, the receipt is essentially issued and a reversal kit is issued with an identical procedure set.
