A grenade launcher made by Deidre's Huge Rack of Guns in YE 33.
The Midir is a single-shot 65mm grenade launcher. While others use primarily 40mm grenades, out in the Colonial Expanse and wilds one requires a bit more security against the dangers of the unknown. Originally developed to deal with the large 'megafauna' of the planet. The Midir's unusual payload was effective in dealing with the often extremely tough and thick hides of the larger animals with enough flexibility of ammo-type to tackle the smaller more pack-oriented ones. To increase utility the Midir can also fire two different types of non-lethal rounds.
Projection/ammo type: 65mm Grenade Projectile
Break Action, Breech Loader
A break-action firearm is one whose barrels are hinged, and rotate perpendicular to the bore axis to expose the breech and allow loading and unloading of ammunition. Being a breech loader, after the barrel is swung down the round is fed directly into the barrel before being returned to place.
The barrel has been scaled up vs more common 40mm munitions with a larger overall diameter to be accommodate the 65mm round. Due to the grenade being rather large, the barrel itself is made of a tough ceramic material while the locking lug and latch are made of steel.
The stock itself is made from Francian “Hellwood” an unusually tough yet undeniably eye pleasing dark reddish brown with an almost braided grain. To help absorb some of the recoil the buttstock comes with a rubberized pad with some cushioning.
Caliber: 65mm Grenade Effective Range 350 Meters Maximum Range: 400 Meters Muzzle Velocity: 78m/s (255ft/s) Muzzle Blast: A puff of smoke and dull “thump” as it fires. Firing Mode: Single Shot Recoil: Heavy.
Larger then the standard 40mm seen elsewhere, the 65mm grenade was originally made to combat the large megafauna species on the planet Francia. Some of these creatures are quite large with excessively tough hides that standard AP rifle munitions could not penetrate effectively.
Visual Description: Large dull gray soda can sized projectile with a rounded head. The head of the round is colored red. Ammo: 1 in the barrel. Damage Description: The round is designed to explode upon impact with the explosive forces causing most of the damage in a small concentrated area. The explosive itself is a densely packed shaped plastic explosive charge. ADR:3
Visual Description: Moderately sized cup-sabot made from plastic holding a tungsten-carbide tipped steel 'Flechette'. Damage Description: While the High-Explosive round is capable of penetrating the oft-times thick and heavy hides of the megafauna it also caused significant damage to the hide itself. This hide could have different assorted uses so an alternative was found to decrease overall damage. The Flechette is a kinetic penetrator round with the harder tungsten-carbide head allows it to pierce armor or hide on impact the mild steel body will sometimes deform and cut wider channels through megafauna or outright deform on impact of heavy armor. The propellant charge is greater however then the normal rounds with an almost 85% increase in velocity. ADR:2
Visual Description: Large dull gray soda can sized projectile with a rounded head. The head of the round is colored green. Damage Description: Designed to combat some of the smaller critters that inhabit the planet and that hunt in large packs. The 'Green' round upon reaching a pre-set distance or impact explodes akin to an airburst round. The 6mm buckshot has been situated in such a way to give an even spread over a selected area as it contains a sabot within the shot cup. PDR:4
Visual Description: Large dull gray soda can sized projectile with a rounded head. The head of the round is colored yellow. Damage Description: The 'Yellow' round isn't exactly a combat round. It is more for signaling, rescue and illumination. The light it emits is a bright yellow allowing a person to easily see it. However if one were to be hit with this it'd cause some burns and is not advised.
Visual Description: Large dull gray soda can-sized projectile with a rounded head. The head of the round is colored blue. Damage Description: The 'Blue' round isn't exactly a combat round. It is more for screening and causing disarray. If you have a pack of wild animals, or a herd near you and want them to scatter in chaos this is the round to use. The smoke composition is mostly compacted white phosphorous. On impact the fuse is tripped and the reaction occurs with the first puff of smoke is released and will continue to be released for several seconds. The smoke itself will hang in the area for a couple of minutes unless there is a breeze. The smoke is gray-white.
Safety: Yes, the Midir has a safety along the top that must be pressed before firing. Weapon Sight: Folding ladder-style leaf-type sight. When folded, the leaf sight acts as a fixed sight for close range. A person may simply point and shoot with high accuracy. When unfolded, the leaf-type sight could be adjusted for ranges from 75m to 375m, in 25m increments. Attachment Hard Points: None.
Field Maintenance Procedure: Wipe and clean after every mission, taking care to scrub the barrel down.
